The dirt and grit and color that comes with European alleys make for great subjects for dynamic night photography. Usually I only stay out for about an hour after it gets dark, but it's hard to stop with this kind of scenery... I mean, you can make a legitimate excuse to stay out all night!

But a lot of people warned me about how dangerous Barcelona can be... I did already meet many people that were robbed blind... I was extra-extra careful... and, in this case, decided to head back to the hotel early. Also, I was feeling pretty under the weather...so yet another excuse.

I like all the colorful votives. They make everything a bit more festive.... Cathedrals can be sort of melancholy places, so anything to liven things up a bit are a nice change of pace. I'm not saying we should go neon-signs or blinky-text on the church's website or anything crazy like that.... just a little somethin-somethin to spice things up a bit.

And I do like that hallway quite a lot... it's got a nice M.C.Escher quality to it.

I was walking through this famous market in Barcelona when one of the editors from Peachpit Press recognized me! What a small world. He is not the editor that worked on my book, but he did a lot of other photography books up there. He was a super-nice guy...and doing the same thing as me...hunting around for photos!

I bought and ate a lot of different things at this place... I wasn't even hungry... but I just kept buying and eating and buying and eating. I felt like the Hedonismbot from Futurama.

I carry around two cameras so I can get things like this. I keep my main body affixed to my tripod with whatever lens fits the bill. This is either a the 14-24 or the 28-300. I keep my second camera with a prime -- either the 50 or 85 prime.

I was taking photos of the festive street at dusk, and I noticed this shopkeeper out taking a rest. I've always admired how people can rest in this position. I can only sit in that position for about 15 seconds before I scream in agony and my patellas pop off at a hyperspeed tangent.

This is a truly beautiful building. I sometimes feel like I am cheating... when the colors and textures and lines are already there, it just makes for such a pleasant shooting experience. StuckInCustoms > Fingers Above River This was one of those Tour-de-France days when I burned about 10,000 calories. I carried my equipment all up and down this valley in Zhangjiajie... up and down each side, traversing the entire length several times, took very few breaks, and ended up sleeping like a baby. That wasn't a complete sentence... I know this. This is just about the same area where I encountered a snake later that night. It was black and gnarly and did nothing to lift my spirits. Right after I arrived in Feng Huang, I went down by the river to walk up and down both sides... and I was drawn to this old waterwheel right away. It was all so quaint... here were old Chinese women washing clothes in the river, and it was all right out of a movie. I only got to spend a few days here... after seeing how wonderful everything was, it's on my list to revisit some day.... I hope it stays like this.

$StuckInCustoms > Dinner at the Post Ranch Inn This is the second photo I have released from the Post Ranch Inn (first one here). It's such a beautiful place, and, while not exploring the property, we were busy looking forward to a great dinner. Just outside the restaurant is this earthy sculpture and waterfall. It was very nice the way the evening light came and refracted through the water... I got this 600mm from BorrowLenses.com to take photos of the shuttle on my first trip. Since the shuttle didn't take off, Scott and I decided to go to the beach and take photos of girls from a distance like real creeps. I openly admit it... we looked downright creepy up there with two huge lenses, peering in every which direction until we saw something interesting.

Then I saw this gal splashing around in the waves with her friends... seemed like a good subject so I took a few shots. With the 600mm I was so far away, that she would have had no idea I was taking them. This made it all feel even more sketchy, but, you know, having said all that, I'm quite happy with the shot.

StuckInCustoms > The Shuttle Prepares
On the day before the launch, I was ushered out a few football fields away from the shuttle. It was surreal being so close, even though I wanted to be closer...closer...closer.... but the 28-300 (See the Nikon 28-300 Review) was plenty lens enough to get in tight so you can see all the details of the shuttle and the launch facility skunkworks...

So, when I took this, I was using two different cameras. The first one was my D3X with the 28-300mm lens on a tripod, and that is how I got this one. It’s an HDR from a single RAW.

Not long after this, the buffer filled up and it started to shoot slowly, so I went to my second camera around my neck, the D3S with a 50mm prime. And I got this shot.

This is the road I got stuck on after my 4-wheeler caught on fire. Now, of course, I had all my photography equipment with me... who wouldn't take a whole host of photo equipment on a 4-wheeler joyride? I don't know! I mean, you gotta be ready just in case the dang thing catches on fire!

StuckInCustoms > Sun Busting Through Stormclouds at NASA
I was in the Tweetup tent doing something terribly important but completely inscrutable when Stu Maschwitz came in and told me that the storm clouds were breaking upon our shores. So I got my little rig and went outside to see the matter.

We get these kind of huge powerful summer clouds in Texas too. The kind that roll in on a too-hot day and you have a feeling that something powerful is a-comin'. You tie down the cows and take the favorite sheep down to the basement because it's gonna be a long night...

The sun darted in and out of the clouds, and I grabbed it just as it peeked through a small hole it tore in the thunderhead.

StuckInCustoms > Walking Across the Old Bridge
While in China, one of the small towns I visited had several little low walking-bridges across the river. It was the sort of river that was too shallow for boats, but good for fishing and washing clothes. This one was in a residential and commercial area. Many of the women wore colorful dresses and walked back and forth across... it all seemed very nice and peaceful so I grabbed an image.
