StuckInCustoms > Across the Top of the Old Village
The old town of Lijiang has these old rooflines that go forever to the horizon. Part of the problem getting up above the roofline is, well, getting up above the roofline. You have to head a bit out of town and walk up a hill to get this perspective. I found the spot thanks to Stuck On Earth.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Russian Sub
There is a longer story around this photo that I caught on video... I'll wait for that to be released! But, as you can see, I clearly got onto a Russian sub in the middle of the night. It was docked right next to the Queen Mary in Long Beach. As I was walking across its iron surface and hearing the empty echoes below, I could not imagine the sub making it all the way from Russia to this harbor. That was a long, dark, cramped ride...- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of the post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Palm Trees at Night
One night in Oahu we were doing some photography along a beach. Off in the distance we saw some palm trees that were lit from the bottom. It was about a quarter mile from anything else, so that was sort of strange. But I thought it was so interesting to see them lit from the bottom with small green pools of light underneath that I decided to walk over there and see what was going on. After I got over there, there were endless compositions of these various trees. I grabbed about five different angles and then took a midnight-nature break of my own...-Trey RatcliffCheck out the full post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Old Man on Steps near Drum Tower
While I was circling the Drum Tower in Beijing, there was a small community of people that were outside exercising, milling around, talking, and watching the world go by. Many of the homes in the little houtong had their doors painted red, and that was a common element that tied everything together. I had my hip-shooter with me too so I could capture this one.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of the post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Waikiki after Sunset
Right after the PhotoWalk in Oahu started, I went over to take this photo. As usual, I talked through it while people were crowded around. But, at first, people didn't ask many questions. That's okay... maybe the situation was weird... but later in the walk, people opened up and started to ask more questions. I think people there were just very nice and didn't want to seem too pushy or anything. I do appreciate that, but people can always feel free to ask me anything. :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Horse and Carriage
I stayed in an amazing place when I was in the south of China, and every morning this horse and carriage would pull up in front. And, like any good model, the horse didn't complain while I went around and took a bunch of shots while fiddling with my camera. This photo was taken with my 50mm lens at ISO 200 f/1.4 and the shutter was 1/8000. I don't know why I just told you all that... I guess some people really like to know. BTW, all that info is avail if you click through to the SmugMug version.- Trey RatcliffRead the rest of this entry at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Awesome Car in Tokyo
Tokyo has a bunch of cool cars all over the place. And look at that license plate! How do you get that number? Maybe you have to part of the Japanese mafia or something...I took this photo a long time ago but only recently processed it. In fact, I took it while we were doing the Tokyo workshop. Remember that thing? I only dedicate about 10-15% of my year to "teaching" stuff, since I am so busy with other things. This year I'm working on a bunch of different things to help this scale, however, since it is hard to be everywhere physically at the same time.- Trey RatcliffRead the rest of this entry at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Gardens in Paris
It was a cool and rainy morning when we left our hotel in the Latin district of Paris. The rains stopped just as soon as we walked into the nearby gardens. The sun would peek out from between the clouds and splash some extra light on the flowers below.I took a bunch of photos before the sun came out, thinking it was the best I could do. But then after the sun came out, I had to run around and re-create the exact same photos with the proper lighting! So, it took us twice as long to get through the gardens... but that is not such a bad thing.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Cafe near the ColosseumWhile I was taking a photo of this scene, a fight broke out! I wasn’t in the middle of it… but I was close enough to hear the nature of the argument. It involved a bunch of drunk guys and mentions of futbol players from various countries. There was even a barstool that was brandished! It was very exciting, but I had to wait for everyone to get their grip before I took the photo…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > New York City TravelSo this is my newest photo of Times Square. I return to this spot time and time again. The situation, light, cars, people, and billboards are always different, so it’s never a dull subject. It’s also always such a challenge to shoot that it keeps all my senses fully honed. In fact, I’m already thinking about going back to New York City for another photograph of Times Square!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read this entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Rock Cleaved
I need more waterfalls in my life! This is what I am thinking whenever I just finish taking photos of waterfalls. As I was walking away from this one in Iceland, where I spent most of the day, I was thinking about the next waterfall. Then the next one. Then the next one. I think it’s cool how something can be so violent and beautiful at the same time.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Holy HallsI returned here a second time with Scott Kublin to show him my little discovery. We didn’t have much time… and I don’t like to be rushed… but we did our best to move quickly around this area and squeeze in as many shots as we could! This is one of my favorites, a view down one of the long rows of unusual columns and vaulted ceilings…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Castle for Sale
This is a somewhat dilapidated castle in Iceland, and it’s for sale! I got out to hike around it and take photos, and I noticed a FOR SALE sign in front! I mean, obviously this falls into the category of “fixer upper” — but look at the view! I bet you can get it for a good price too… Let’s see who can figure it out first!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > After the Blast Off One thing that impressed me after the shuttle took off was the shadow across the top of the clouds. I had never seen anything like it, and it was completely unexpected. Of course, it makes perfect sense, but it’s one of those little after-the-fact-obvious things that makes you happy.I have another offer to jump out of a plane with the US Army Golden knights DURING an upcoming rocket launch… and I can take photos on the descent. That sounds pretty dang awesome and tough!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Girls in Tokyo This is one of my favorite areas of Tokyo. The dressed-up girls are only one of the reasons! Also, it’s the home of all sorts of crazy electronics, video games, gadgets, and other things that geeky guys from all cultures think is awesome. These girls are all over the streets handing out little pamphlets and brochures for various goods and services. Whatever you’re into, well, they’ve got a place for it… sweet Japan! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
