It also had a nice side-effect down in the river. StuckInCustoms > Airports in China Asian airports are some of the best in the world, eh? These architects must love designing them... they get to go crazy and try all kinds of experimental things. Not only are they huge, but the inventive lines and shapes make them virtually inexhaustible subjects for photography!This shot was taken further inside the Beijing (PEK) airport as you are approaching the gate. I kept my tripod as carry-on here for a few reasons. First, so I could take photos in the airport. Second, so I would have it at landing just in case my bag was lost! Just like above, I took photos without any hesitation before she noticed what was going on. StuckInCustoms > The CNCC Here is the convention center in Beijing at Dusk. They call it the CNCC. I don't know what that stands for, but I can guess what two of the C's mean. This is a strange thing I have noticed about Beijing. Many people speak in abbreviations. I had many people tell me of the CNCC like it was something I knew perfectly well. I would just end up nodding because when I would ask for what it stood for, they were confused. "You should go to the CNCC!" they say. "What's that?" I ask. "Oh, you know! StuckInCustoms > An Icy Morning, Searching for Hot Coffee Driving across the frozen bits of Iceland in the summer is always scary. I drive across a lot of ice, and I’m never terribly excited about it. I’ve been with people that drive across the stuff all the time, and they pay it no mind.For a short bit in Iceland, I got to ride for a while with a guy that’s driven to the south pole a few times. Man, that guy can really drive on ice. StuckInCustoms > Inside the Dome This beautiful dome was inside one of the side-cloisters in the Forbidden City. I remember spending about five minutes trying to line this up inside the camera. These can be very difficult to re-align in Photoshop. StuckInCustoms > Sunflowers So is it a weed or is it a flower? I am sure people in the plant-community get as exercised discussing these categorizations as I do about talking about categorizing photography. You would not believe the millions of words and sentences wasted discussing photography and how to categorize one type of photo. I can only assume the same thing happens in the flower/botany community!I got this one with my friend Scott Kublin one day in the south of France. We had Fabien (the website designer) pull over on a tiny little road so we could pop out and get some sunflower photos. I think he almost got rear-ended while waiting on us, so he had to pull away then circle back to get us! StuckInCustoms > Boat in Isafjordur This area is in the far northwest of Iceland up where there fjords layer into one another like fractals. StuckInCustoms > Endeavor to the Beyond This photo was a bit of an accident. I was as close as humanly possible to the launch, on the edge of the media area in the NASA compound. When the shuttle blasts off, there is a long delay before you hear the thing. Right when I took this, the first staccato wave ripped through my skeleton. StuckInCustoms > Under the Factory As I explored the abandoned airplane factories in this old section of Beijing, I went down into the basement level to see what I could find. There were all sorts of iron fixtures, strange knobs and wheels, semi-circular openings to kilns that had been bricked closed, and endless layers of peeling, scorched paint.I wanted to go back to this whole area to explore more, but maybe next time. StuckInCustoms > The Tattoo Shop I did a Google+ hangout last night where I worked on this photo. I took it just recently at the San Francisco PhotoWalk with Thomas Hawk. It was a great night... so many sights to be seen there. As usual, I had two cameras with me. One was for quick street shots with a 50mm prime. The other had my 14-24mm (see Nikon 14-24mm Review) on for these sorts of shots. It was a rainy night when we were arriving home, so I had a feeling it would be a good time for photography! My intuition is not always spot-on, but in this case it worked out pretty well.
