StuckInCustoms > Morning Mist at the Lagoon This was shot in Stanley Park in Vancouver one morning. Vancouver always seems to be nice and cloudy, so the colorful trees around the park always stand out nicely. There was a giant swan floating nearby while I was walking around, so I took this single RAW and converted to HDR so I could be sure to get all the little colors in the trees and the various shades in the sky and water.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > A Little Place I Found on the Way to Dinner in Germany I wish I could walk to dinner every night and find little places like this along the way. Since I carry my tripod and camera just about everywhere, I'd always be ready in case something like this pops up!This was shot in Halle, Germany, just a short train ride from Leipzig. I love how these old churches are often lit with orange lights... I think it always makes them look nice against the blue dusky skies.Setting up the tripod for these evening HDRs always allows you to set the ISO as low as possible, and in aperture priority mode, the shutter will stay open for a long time, letting those clouds drift by and drag light across the lens. It gives a nice feel to the shot and makes the church look even more timeless and solid.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Airy Doom of the Duomo The most difficult thing about this shot was hiding my tripod from the security guards. The second hardest thing was the HDR processing from this shot melting my CPU core.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Ready to Strike I found this guy in some caves just outside of Kuala Lumpur. I've always wanted one for a pet because it is both eccentric and people might mistake me for a bond villain. I understand these can be house-trained even. Well, one of these can be house-trained and the other kind, that looks similar, is quite dangerous and the bacteria in his saliva can kill you. So, since I always get Gila Monsters and Iguanas confused, I never ended up getting one because I would hate to bring home the wrong thing. This was a single-shot HDR. It really helped to bring out all the texture and color in the scales. It was shot at a low f-stop to keep the focus on the creature, rather than its surroundings.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Alone in Winter, Against the World... This is one desolate place. It's the southern coast of Iceland where the sea and the wind were absolutely ripping their way past me and the lighthouse. I always imagine what it is like to be inside of one of those lighthouses, all night long through the winter. I can't even envision what that would be like, and after only a short time there in the icy wind, I got the willies and was happy to get out of there.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > About 13km into the Andes Trek Our hike is starting to get closer to our quarry. The destination inside the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares are the isolated peaks of FItz Roy.Every few kilometers the terrain can change drastically. Because all the land around here is recently glaciated, the soil is very fresh and full of life. The strange mountain formations make for unpredictable weather patterns and cloud/fog formations across the landscapes. Even better, we are here in the middle of autumn, so many of the leaves are turning. It's always a welcome relief to take off my pack, set it down, and then wander about for some photos. I grabbed this one along the way to share with you all.I noticed that the Wikipedia entry for Monte Fitz Roy said, "the weather in the area is exceptionally inclement and treacherous". No shit. Wait until you see the shot I upload tomorrow. It was taken after 16km of walking in a single day after waking up to -7 degrees at 4:30 AM from a tent that contained the heavily scented noxious scents of the one and only Yuri.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Magic of Disney's Main Street at Night Disney after dark is very cool... All the lights change and it comes alive even more, if possible. One trick that I have picked up is the essential nap while at Disneyworld for the entire family. We head back to the room after a busy morning and a carbo-bloat lunch for a family nap. It keeps everyone sane. And then, we can all stay up late with minimal chance of breakdown. Seeing kids breakdown at Disneyworld is just not right... it's not so Disney...- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Edge of Iceland at Sunset This is the latest photo I have processed with Lucis Pro 6.0 -- there are several more samples in the Tutorial- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Duomo This is one of the largest and most famous buildings in Europe. The inside of the Duomo is so vast that it can hold 40,000 people, which is more than most football stadiums.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Old Wild Stampede These horses came thundering onto the scene while I was walking down the road. I got myself behind a tree so I would not get trampled like Mufasa. I was lucky that they started kicking up dust in the right position relative to the sun so that their legs cast shadows through the cloud. I can't take credit for that one!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > This is Ranjit Ranjit's dream is that he gets to work in the factory again.Ranjit is currently sitting in front of an old restaurant on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. He used to work in a nearby factory, making aluminum parts, but he was replaced after his cataracts got too heavy and he began making mistakes. Ranjit does not like being a burden on his son, who doesn't come to see him much anymore. He says, motioning off into the distance behind me, "The boy is in Putrajaya, living in government house." He keeps reaching out in that direction, groping around, as if he is trying to find a light switch in the dark.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > A World in HDR - The Book Announcement

I am very excited to announce an HDR Book entitled “A World in HDR”! It’s a 216-page book that should be everything you have been waiting for. The vast majority of the book contains select pieces from the portfolio along with extended descriptions, tips, and more information about how the photo was achieved. The second part of the book contains the HDR Tutorial along with a few bonus steps to help you get extra oomph in your creations!
StuckInCustoms > The Blue Before the Storm This was taken literally five minutes before I got drenched to go under the shade and drink coffee for an hour, stranded with my camera, imagining my panacea of Photomatix later in the day.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > A Cool Waterfall to Relax at During the Hike During the hike through the Andes, I would vacillate between sweating hot and frigid cold. Sometimes, things would be just about perfect and an idyllic waterfall like this one would emerge from the Eden-like trail. It was the perfect place to take a load off in the cool water for a break.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Setting Sun and the Farm As I was leaving a network of jagged roads through some mountains at the end of a fjord, I emerged out into this Icelandic fertile crescent of sorts. There were tiny farms all over the countryside and they looked very nice while the sun was setting, so I grabbed this shot to remember it!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
