The Megopolis Hong Kong - What Happens Around Dusk Believe it or not, there is a small documentary being filmed about me. I don't know what to think about it - only to assume it is going to be rather boring! I think it is going to be a lot like Grizzly Man, just without the bear.As this gal is going about her process of gathering materials, she asked me for a few of the original shots from Hong Kong so she can show them during the documentary. StuckInCustoms > Stuck in Customs in Space I love this shot! It came out wicked. I used to say wicked a lot in grade school and I still like saying it. This may or may not make me lame, and I can't be objective about such things.This is the airport in Bangkok, Thailand. I am not sure who the architect is, but it came out quite inspired. Taking photos of beautiful architecture is somewhat of a sport of mine. After just a bit, you get mesmerized by the wheat fields.Driving along, I always start to play games with the clouds and the objects on the horizon. StuckInCustoms > The Icy Explosion This is Strokkur, the biggest geyser in Iceland and the second biggest in the world. It can shoot twice as high as Old Faithful in the states, and it blasted off about every 5-6 mins or so... which seems like a VERY long time while standing around in the wintery mix of the frozen tundra. StuckInCustoms > Exploring Kyoto at Night I think I could stay in Kyoto for a few years and go out taking photos every day and night! What a picturesque place… I feel like someone designed it a thousand years ago just for HDR! Now, I think this is a pretty darned good example of HDR. When you are there, you do see all these colors and light levels. Absolutely! StuckInCustoms > The Grotto This is Hamilton Pool, one of the best kept secrets in Austin. The preserve’s pool and grotto were formed when the dome of an underground river collapsed thousands of years ago. There is a ring of 45-foot waterfalls all around the rim. StuckInCustoms > The Secret Underwater Passage This was shot under the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas where they have this lavish aquarium. It's really gorgeous and dreamy under there, as you can tell. This area has all kinds of sharks and other wild-lookin' things that were swimming all around me. I was fortunate enough to take a private tour of the place thanks to the nice people at the MGM/Mirage management company, who also owns the Mandalay Bay. That allowed me to take the time I needed to set up this 5-exposure HDR shot without tourists getting in the way.One time I did find a nurse shark in the Caribbean. It was a baby. I followed it for a while until it occurred to me that it might be swimming back to its mom. That sudden realization made me turn around pretty quick.All of this underwater stuff reminds me of watching those Discovery channel shows about strange ocean creatures. I swear I could watch those things all day. I can't get over how some of these things have evolved to fit their environment... just amazing. My favorite creatures are cephalopods ... StuckInCustoms > Le Arc de Triumph from the Champs-Élysées This wonderful landmark is always fun, but challenging, to photograph. It's right in the middle of a roundabout that is as dangerous as that thing Bond got stuck in to test G-forces in Moonraker. There was a recent rain, and the Champs-Élysées was shiny and perfect in the cool dusk air. StuckInCustoms > Cutting the Wheat This shot is from the northern part of Montana, up where the fields go on forever. StuckInCustoms > Blowtorch I understand from my mom that Kuala Lumpur was also one of my grandfather's favorite cities. He used to work for Exxon, back in the middle of the 20th century. It's hard for me to imagine what it looked like back then. It's too bad I wasn't ever able to show him this photo to see his reaction.KL is called one of the Asian "small tigers" because of its booming economy in the last 20 years or so. Many Asian cities are very pretty with unique architecture. Since many of them are so "new", the architecture is often much more modern than their Western counterparts. StuckInCustoms > The One Sent Me to the Northern Rockies to Get this Sunset Photo for The Machine I tip my hat to the great Kevin Kelly, who always seems to be surfing on the same wave, giving me hang-ten signs via his polemics. In case you don’t know who Kelly is, watch one of his great speeches at TED right here.The One is already extending itself with me. I am totally comfortable with the fact that I was a human that used technology to extend myself, which I still do to ever increasing degrees. All the while, I have felt this unexpected coalition would flip and The One would start using me to feed The Machine compelling content… I just didn’t know when it would happen.But you know that feeling when you have food poisoning, and you just KNOW you’re going to vomit later, so you might as well be tough and make it happen now? I’m certainly at that point with this daily blog at www.stuckincustoms.com, where I feel wonderfully compelled to go gather meaningful content to be added to The Machine.I push the theory forward a bit more and separate The One and The Machine into sort of a "soul" and a "body". The One is an imperfect symphony of the thoughts and desires of everyone on the net, and The Machine is the guts that keep track of all the goodies. The One is right brained and The Machine is left brained, but I am out there, working for both, as a willing agent.I have written pages more about this, and in the very likely case that this is hopelessly confusing to you, I’ll spare you the details! StuckInCustoms > Heart of Satan What it looks like when fireworks explode inside of a storm cloud over a river.On this particular night, there was one of those looming thunderstorms, when the clouds are alarmingly low to the ground and black/green in color. They launched the fireworks from the same spot as usual, but they would actually explode inside the cloud. The lower half would burst downward, carrying a trail of fire behind it.
