StuckInCustoms > The Dark Temple Corridor in Morning Mist at 4 AM I arrived at the temple of Borobudur a little after 4 AM. I had a tiny disposable flashlight, and, other than my driver idling about a mile away, I was the only person here. In fact, it was my second day in a row to do this, since I had so much fun the first. I was there with my friend Will, and he decided to sleep in the second day… but I had a few shots in mind I wanted to grab before the sun came up. There were these strange argon lights around the temple to light up areas of excavation. They cast a gloomy and surreal light on the Buddhist reliefs that make concentric circles up to the top. It was there day after day… alluring and perfect… looking warm and fun… I would walk around it, admire it, take photos of it, pass it on the way to the spa… I did just about everything to that pool but get in. I thought about it a lot, for whatever that’s worth (a lot, actually, I have an active imagination). StuckInCustoms > This is Sujatmi Sujatmi’s dream is that her grandkids grow up to be brave and smart. She is currently sitting in a makeshift annex area in a bustling riverside community in Jogjakarta, Indonesia. Dozens of tiny thatched and improvised houses are cobbled together and brightly painted. There are kids running around and other adults running after them, trying to get them to sit still so they can begin school. I’ve accidentally interrupted the whole affair while getting confused in the tiny alleys, no wider than a set of shoulders. StuckInCustoms > The Intersection Today we have a new photo from downtown Tokyo. By now, you have probably figured out that I just can't get enough of these downtown shots. Each angle is nice and different in its own way. Sometimes I like to freeze the action, and sometimes I like to let it flow. It totally depends on my mood when I am shooting.While I am there, I usually have a pretty good idea of how I want to execute the post-processing. It changes the way I take the shots. For example, if I want the action frozen, I'll crank up the ISO so that the people don't drag across the shutter too much. I have my 5 exposures so that the +2 (the longest) fires first. So I know if the middle exposure (the anchor, I call it) has a shutter that is open too long. I can just hear it. If it feels too long, I double the ISO and it halves the shutter speed of the anchor. StuckInCustoms > The Restaurant in Tokyo that Inspired that Crazy Scene from Kill Bill When I was in Tokyo, I had a great time out with Altus! He stayed with me here in Austin, and we were able to meet up for a fun time of photography out in Tokyo. That’s one of the BEST things about having a blog, I must say! It gives me the chance to meet all kinds of nice people like YOU that extend gracious invitations for photography! After dark, Altus took me to this cool restaurant (btw, the original sized version has nice details on Flickr!) The manager was very nice and let us sit where we wanted and then a carte-blanche for taking photos. He asked if I would send him photos and if I charge… and I told him no… I do this stuff for fun! StuckInCustoms > Above the World It's no huge surprise that I'm enamored with the landscapes in New Zealand. So, today, I'm posting a new photo from the South Island. There is a gondola ride that goes to the top of one of the mountains in Queenstown. It's not one of the ski areas -- just an area for hanging out, seeing the sites, the luge, dinner, and this sort of thing. But it's always stunning. I went up there a few times. They have one of those giant buffet dinners up there where I took the family. It's one of those high-end ones where you try a little bit of everything and then realize that you are way too full and bloated... StuckInCustoms > Her Tears Flowed Today we have a new one from Beijing. I'm happy to say the art movement is alive and well in Beijing! There are still issues here and there, to be sure. For example, I heard that there was one artist in particular who had his studio torched by the government in Shanghai. That really sucks! But, despite that nonsense, there are still plenty of areas of artistic expression. It's not as wide-open as the west, but it's better than ever (and only going in one direction). One afternoon in Beijing, I went to a huge artistic area, much like SoHo. It's called the 798 Art Zone. 50 years ago, it was a huge military factory, but it's been converted to about a hundred funky art studios, galleries, quirky restaurants, and more. Very cool! Inside one of the larger exhibition halls, I found this interesting piece.
