StuckInCustoms > Home of the Tree Samurai This was my second trip to Kyoto, and I decided to return to this amazing treetop temple. At night, the delicate lights turn on and everything comes alive. It's really brilliant... one of those scenes that makes you think the world is really a wonderful place. This was right in the peak of the cherry blossom season. The soft pink of the blossoms grabs and reflects the light into an unbelievable prism. It's all like something out of a dream, and I've done my best to bring it back to life here ...- Trey RatcliffRead more, including some exciting info on the upcoming Burning Man photowalk here at the entry at stuckincustoms.com.
StuckInCustoms > A Gentle Kiss in the Hot Tub These snow monkeys are the greatest. I spent so long with them, we almost had a three-way. They are all wild (in the natural sense, mind you), and they come down from the mountains near Nagano, Japan, for several hours a day to play in the natural hot springs. They gallivant around, have fights, play with their kids, have a bit of sweet carnal monkey fun, check their email, and pose for my camera. These two monkeys spent a lot of time together... they were in maximum "relaxation mode". They lounged around in every possible position and took occasional breaks to do a bit of mutual grooming.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > On the Way to the Jump This is what I look like right before I leave this mortal coil. - Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Golden Knights are Bad Ass I have not had much time this weekend to process new photos, but I did take a moment to process this one. This was taken during an evening demonstration on the night before OpenCamp began. It was an unforgettable night with the Knights! After falling a few miles from the sky, the skydivers would open up their chutes & pyrotechnics and let loose. Since I had jumped with them the day before, they let me get up close on the landing to get some tight shots.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Storm Hitting the Barn It was about 3 in the afternoon and things were getting over-the-top warm. You know that feeling when the weather gets so uncomfortably warm that you expect something to happen soon? This feeling washed over me about 30 minutes before these violent clouds form to sweep over the Rocky Mountains towards the barn. The tripod was nearby, so I grabbed it to go outside and set up the easel. - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest of this entry here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Rainbow over the London Eye Today's shot is of the newly famous London Eye. It's more than just a ferris wheel. I can understand why it was so controversial when it was being built. What proper city would want a carnival-esque attraction right in the middle of it all? Well, this is no regular ferris wheel. It's at least four times bigger than most, and each capsule is like a tiny plane. Sadly, I didn't have a chance to go inside for a ride... - Trey Ratcliff Find out why here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Wicked London So, I just got finished watching Wicked in London. It was a very cool experience. I would have enjoyed getting a few more shots of the environs and actors/actresses -- maybe next time! The stage was wonderfully elaborate and fantasy-steampunk. I didn't expect so much steampunk stuff in my life lately... - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest of this entry here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Young girl on a bridge in Paris After a shooting a set of shots with the sun rising over Notre Dame, I saw a few girls on the bridge with me. It was a little cold this morning, and they were in coats, laughing and playing with their own camera. With my tripod still set up, I grabbed my D3S and 50 prime on my sling. I pulled it up quickly to grab a shot of one of the girls as she covered her face from the cool wind of the morning. - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest of the entry here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > “The Place” I’ve said it before, and I will say it again — the Chinese are not always the best at naming things. I just don’t get it. All I can figure is that these names are ultimately decided upon by a committee. And this is why you never see a statue of a committee. (well, except for maybe in China)Anyway, besides the horrible name of this place — “The Place” — it is an awesome place! It’s a modern outdoor shopping center with all the sorts of shops that one might expect. High end shoe stores, purse stores, clothes, espresso, and the like. The centerpiece of the whole place is this enormous downward-facing diamond-vision screen. I’ve heard it’s one of the biggest in the world, and I don’t doubt it. While shopping, underlings are entertained by non-stop animations and cool artsy video montages set to music. It’s quite the spectacle!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Amazing Airport I went in and out of this airport in Beijing a few times. Some might argue a few too many times. That some might be me. It’s an absolutely beautiful airport. It was so amazing in size and scope that I could not figure out what part to present to you first! But we’ll start with this one, at the entrance to the international terminal. This is near the dropoff area for the international departures. It’s the bit where you roll in your bags and try to figure out where the heck to find the counter for Air Sheep.By the way, I took a ton of photos all over the Beijing airport. No one ever gave me any grief for using my tripod. As you might expect, HDR in this place is an absolute blast — and not having to worry about getting in trouble for using a tripod is even better!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Gentle Oxbow Do perfect little places like this really exist? Yes! But they are a little hard to find… They’re not in guidebooks or written about on [most] travel photography websites. In fact, they’re all over the place. This was taken in an area of southern Iceland, on the road not too far from Hvolsvollur and Vik. If you just turn off the main road and meander down a few dirt paths, places like this are everywhere. One of the most unusual places about this, which is missing from the photograph, are the bird sounds. They were extremely unusual, high-pitched, and made small siren-sounds when diving to and fro. The strange-nature sounds made me feel even more like I was on some strange Star Trek away mission.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Red Gate After Rain When I’m someplace interesting, I usually set the alarm to get up quite early. Painful, yes. And then, when I’m in that half-wake state, I stumble to the window to look at the clouds and weather. If it’s a mess, I don’t go, and joyfully crawl back into bed. That’s just about the best feeling in the world. But, sometimes, I force myself to go out anyway… that is what happened on this day. It was one of those frustrating mornings when it was raining — which makes carrying an umbrella + tripod + two cameras + camera bag quite a drain! But after walking a few kilometers, I found this giant red gate that led to a quiet temple complex. I set up for a few shots before venturing into the beyond.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Climbing the Spires of Pandora Here’s a photo of me on another one of my masochistic (but awesome!) photo adventures around the world. See all those spires back behind me? I’m actually up on top of one of them. This is a hard-to-reach area of southern China that was the inspiration to some of those scenes from Avatar. I climbed those spires twice in the same day. I got to one of the top of them just as the sun set, and had to descend in the middle of the absolute dark. I had a tiny flashlight on my camera that kept me out of trouble. I’ll never forget the time I was two inches from stepping on this very mysterious and bad-ass snake that would have liked nothing better than to rock my face off. And yes, when I travel, I miss my family. They often meet me for bits and pieces.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read about this place at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Exploring the Cathedral No tripods allowed. I think maybe it said this in French. Or English. I can't remember because I ignored it. How are you supposed to get a decent photo inside Notre Dame without a tripod?I spent this weekend processing a bunch of photos from France, and this is one that took quite a while. People often ask me, 'How long do you work on your photos?" My answer is always a bit strange, since any time-allotment will not seem correct. The thing is... I've processed so many photos over the years -- I've gotten very fast at it. I've got macros, keyboard shortcuts, etc etc. I think I might look like a Korean Starcraft player... I slow it down a lot for the tutorial and stuff. But, anyway, having said that, my answer is "anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours". This shot in particular took a little over an hour. It was a hard one... I had to take a few breaks and refill the green tea a few times to work out some issues with it.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > A Beautiful Morning in Beijing Another early morning outing found me at this place, just outside the Forbidden City. The morning was crisp and clear.
It was one of those mornings where you feel like moving around to both stay awake and to stay warm. I walked to the top of the temple with all my stuff. It was a lot of steps... too many steps for that early in the morning! But, I was surrounded by a lot of early-morning Chinese people working out. What was interesting is that most of them seemed to be over 50 years old. And there were A LOT of them! They were working it hard, and kind of making me look bad.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
