StuckInCustoms > The Silent Bridge When I woke up in Nikko, snow had been falling all night. I started a long walk from the old lodge where I was staying towards the older area that has all the temples. Along the way, I passed by this old bridge with it's ancient and lavish design. Underneath it, the crystal-clear water flowed quickly as the snowmelt was giving it a bit more action than usual. StuckInCustoms > Flowers in the Field New Zealand is endlessly pastoral... scenic farm after scenic farm... so relaxing! Every so often, you come to one of these fields that full of thousands of colorful flowers. They seem to go so well with that soft, cornflower blue sky at those latitudes. The only problem is talking yourself into stopping at one farm versus another! Because, you know... as a guy, I rank everything. I can't help it. So, I'm always comparing one little farm to the next little farm. And there is so little difference between Awesome Scene #1 vs. Awesome Scene #2, that I just get confused about which one to stop at... and then I keep diving hoping that a #3 will pop up making #1 and #2 seem like silly choices! StuckInCustoms > Winter Wonderland I was peeking back through my previous photos today for an unexpected reason and decided to put together some of my favorite winter photos today! I came across it because people sprinkle comments all over the 1000+ posts here on the blog every day. It's very hard for me to keep up... I usually only get to respond to the most recent comments on newer posts, but I do go back on occasion. StuckInCustoms > A Chilly Morning in Boston Common I had an 8 AM meeting in Boston but woke up round 6 to go walk around the Boston Commons and frolic in the snow. There was no frolicking involved. There was a lot of freezing involved, and it reminded me of a bad morning I had in Kiev with a gypsy cab in a blizzard. StuckInCustoms > The Old Shed (and Iceland on my mind!) For this next week, I'm going to do something a little different. I'll keep up the tradition of a NEW photo every day. But I'll also throw in a grouping of my favorites from that particular location. We've recently grown to half a million pageviews per month in the past year or so, and I know there are many newcomers who might have missed some of the most unique spots in the world. I'm happy to reshare some of these favorites while still showing the new stuff!This first shot below is from one of the fjords in the far Northwest of Iceland. It was a long and desolate morning when I arrived here. I had been driving all night, after the 2 AM sunrise, weaving back and forth on dirt roads up and down fjords. Little farmhouses are scattered here and there -- many of them abandoned. StuckInCustoms > Cleaving the Earth The southern edge of Iceland is some of the roughest and most beautiful ocean surf I have ever seen. Standing on igneous rock, wind ripping around me, and the surf crashing in every direction was incredibly intimidating and awe-inspiring at the same time. StuckInCustoms > Don’t Worry Mom – The Roads in Iceland Aren’t That Bad I drove up to the extreme north of Iceland yesterday to do some serious exploration. I told my mom not to worry… the roads are not too bad. When Rebekka took me out to the fjords to go shoot horses, I did not expect that the horses would be nearly so hairy. We stopped to get some water on the way, and I grabbed a photo of him. StuckInCustoms > The Castle Alley Well a big merry Christmas to you! I hope you all are having a good holiday week! We'll continue with our country-by-country week o' photos. Today... let's do... France! It's a good one, oui? I'll begin today with a new photo from Montpellier, in the south of France. We stayed there with a wonderful family (my friends Jacques and Marie) and had an amazing time. One evening, they took us out for dinner at a perfect little place on a quiet side-street. Along the way, Jacques, who is also a photographer, took me to this amazing castle-cathedral. He said, "I think this is probably a good area for photography." StuckInCustoms > Bistrot de Lyon I went out to dinner with a bunch of cool Russians after the conference on Tuesday. We went down one of the most popular streets in Lyon to have some seafood. Afterwards, the founder of this other company and I went out to shoot photos.. I think we walked the streets for about 3 hours until 2 AM. It was a big mistake since my flight left early the next morning! StuckInCustoms > The Bellweathers Today, we're showing a new photo from Indonesia - the unique temple of Borobudur. This was taken prior to sunrise, when a thick layer of damp fog covered the mountain lowlands, where this temple is located outside of Jogjakarta. It was one of those very wet mornings when there is really no appropriate attire. It's not too cool and not too hot - but just "uncomfortable."
