StuckInCustoms > Father and Daughter in Beijing I was in one of my favorite artsy/bohemian areas of Beijing with my D3S doing some people-photography. It’s some of the best people-watching in the world around there. This area is full of all sorts of galleries, shops, curio-stores, antique shops, and other various unique Chinese shopping. The crowd ranges from the wildly artistic to families out on a little escapade. While I was weaving through the crowd myself, I spied this father and daughter walking in my direction…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Chinaman’s Hat Also known as Mokolii, this distinctive island seems to stay in your view for a few hours as you go along the coast of Oahu.EXIF-hunters will notice that I used my D3S to take this photo instead of my D3X. I had to give that D3X a rest after getting it too wet over the previous four days of rainfall. In fact, this was the first opening of the skies after an endless torrent of water and storm. I was so happy to see some dynamic skies and be in the perfect spot when it happened…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Los Angeles from Runyon Canyon I spent most of the day at Tom’s house in the Hollywood hills doing interviews. Getting interviewed all day is kind of a draining thing, in a way. The day was dreadfully cloudy, but around 5 PM, I started to think the sky would be interesting at sunset and into the night. So we wrapped up everything quickly then headed up to the top of Runyon Canyon to see the city from above.I used the 28-300mm lens here in portrait mode and zoomed in all the way to the 300mm setting.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Deep inside the Haunted Engine Room Right after the LA PhotoWalk, I decided to do something that may or may not have been illegal. There is a haunted ship docked off the coast of Long Beach that has been partially converted to a hotel – the Queen Mary. There is a little tour that takes you around haunted bits here and there. Tom and I left the tour to start exploring on our own…. we found all sorts of amazing and creepy, abandoned places… this is one of them.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Disney Temple I put up a photo of a temple in Oahu yesterday, and it occurred to me that this is just another form of the temple… sort of a modern-day worship of spas and relaxation! You can make an argument that, in many ways, this is just as beautiful as those revered buildings of another age…This is the Aulani, a Disney resort on Oahu. Tom and I drove over here to take photos one evening. I didn’t stay here overnight, but I did stay late into the evening to take photos. There’s also a big beach and a ton of cool spots to take photos. I think I pretty much filled up a card with all the photo ops!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > A Smooth Landing This was a wild last-second shot! I was driving down the highway along the coast of Oahu with Tom and we saw this area where these parachuters were practicing landing. Not being a hardcore parachuter (having only done it once!), I didn’t really understand that a landing was something one could “practice” — I figured you just either landed or you died. It seemed pretty binary. Anyway, while there was all this activity, I jumped out there and put my 14-24 on my camera so I could get in close on some of the landings for some fun shots…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Little Telephone Booth in France
I went through a small market not too far from Notre Dame that was filled with thousands of little curios. I had my 50mm prime on my camera, so I went a little crazy. It’s a tough thing, really… how do you know when to stop? There were literally 1,000 different cool photos to take in the little market… I made due with about 50 and called it a day. Here’s one of them that I quite like…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > San Francisco on an Early Morning
I'm excited to share this one!I think this is my favorite image of San Francisco I've ever taken. It wasn't terribly difficult. The hike was pretty short, even though there was one dangerous part. The only other hard part, I suppose, was planning the day/night before so I could stay in Sausalito and wake up early for a quick jaunt over to this area.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of the post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Village of Lijiang
I tried to get this shot for almost a week!It turns out there is a hill/mountain that requires significant planning and calories to ascend for this dusky time falls. And I kept miscalculating the time with Tom. We always thought the sunset would be a little later than it was. And then we would start to get up into position, and we realized it was too late -- so we went to go do something else instead. This evening, I would snap a few photos and then sit down with my sketch pad and work on a few drawings. I'd wait about 10 minutes for the light to change between photos... and it was nice just to listen to music and play around with some sketching-ideas...- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Bridge Through Steamy Jungle
Here's another photo from that Disney resort in Oahu. I guess there's nothing about that make it Disney other than it's kinda cool and "feels" right. It makes me wish all bridges had little lights like this!Just in the distance there maybe you can make out a bit of light blue water. That is part of a little lazy river that snakes around the property. By this time, I was pretty tired and was really thinking about jumping on a raft while people handed me hors d' oeuvres while I floated by...- Trey Ratcliff Read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Wind and DriftwoodIt was so windy out there — I’m not even sure the video captures it! Maybe you can see the wind ripping the top of the foam away from the waves… or maybe you can see some of the sand blowing across the beach. And it’s just as hard to capture the feeling of it all in the photo as it is in the video. I don’t have the benefit of multiple frames, so I try to get all of that in a single frame. It’s a wonderful challenge and puzzle!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Girl Running in Santa Monica
This is the first photo I got during the LA PhotoWalk. After I was on the steps and gave my little speech-thing, I went down right to the water's edge to see what I could find. This little girl was running up the beach to her dad, so I grabbed a quick one while I talked through the shot for the crowd. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, since everything was unplanned.- Trey RatcliffRead the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Driving from Petaluma to Napa I've made this trip a few times, but it is usually in the morning and on the way from Napa to Petaluma. This is usually the situation because I stay at my mom's house before going over to do a show with Leo Laporte. This time, it was the opposite (well, kinda... I didn't sleep with Leo), but I did the show first then drove to Napa to have dinner with my mom.Tom was with me, and we were on a sharp lookout for a good sunset situation. While driving by this old barn, I saw a great opportunity, so we got out of the car to get all the equipment ready...- Trey RatcliffRead the rest of the post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Waikiki at NightAnd during the photowalk, there were many great chances to take photos of the city. It was exciting for me — it was my first time to see the city at night. All the Oahu people were kind of used to it, I assume… But it was also exciting to have them all around. When I set up for these shots during the photowalks, it’s always extra-strange. Because I’m really trying to get a good shot, but I also know that a ton of people are watching me right there. And then I talk through my shot while I’m taking it. And, of course, I NEED to get a good shot… there are so many vectors of attention that it can be a little distracting… but I do my best!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Man in HutongThese are some of the most off-the-map areas in and around the cities of China. These Houtongs originally meant “water wells” and were established during China’s dynastic period. They still exist today as little cultural centers where old families live and work and sit on the steps and watch the world go by…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
