The Hearst Tomb Thomas Hawk brought me to this cemetery. He always takes me to the most romantic places.He remarked (and he is right) that he is surprised that Hearst has such a “small” tomb. It does seem rather understated, compared to the other monstrosities he built. But maybe he’s just being a little bit humble in his tomb. It’s hard to say…This photo was pretty much pitch black with a little bit of light that would collect over time. StuckInCustoms > Old Forest in Yosemite
When I was walking through this forest, we had a photowalk-of-sorts going on with a ton of people going here and there. It was sort of Ewok-like with all the activity. We’d all have to ask one another to hide behind trees and duck out of the way, since we were all criss-crossing our shots this way and that. Often times, the shot I really wanted to get required me to clamber up and over big fallen trees. There’s not really a graceful way to do this. Sometimes the most fun things to buy are things you can't get on Amazon. But that also means you have to carry the thing. I have gotten a little spoiled by not-buying things in person. Often times, I'll just scan the image with my phone and then have Amazon ship it right to my house so I don't have to carry the thing. I know this is lazy, but it is also kind of cool. After my very early morning in San Francisco, I started moving my way further up the mountain. The orientation of the bridges kept changing relative to one another with Oakland in the background. Once I got up high enough, I affixed the 28-300mm to the body, zoomed in, and got this shot.I was lucky that the morning mist/fog gave a nice sheen to everything. I kind of wish I lived in SF. I had a two-hour tea service that was pleasant and relaxing. After this, I was allowed to wander the private gardens and inner cloisters for a while. I had the best sunsets on one of my first evenings in Yosemite. I drove down a long road from the Tenaya Lodge to Tunnel View alone. The road is about a 45-minute twisty set of curves that is perfect for scenery and listening to audiobooks. StuckInCustoms > Paddleboard in Hawaii
The weather in Hawaii was rather dour and dismal for most of my trip. I only caught one sunset while there, so I decided to try to make the most of it.This lone paddleboarder was skating across the surface of the ocean while I was walking along the beach. Although this photo looks fairly serene and calm, I was not. On one of my final nights in San Francisco, I walked out on the dock off the Embarcadero to see what I could see. There were nice views in every direction, and one of the best was looking straight back up the dock at the Transamerica building.This wide-angle 14-24 lens is one of my favorites, but it does have one little problem that can also be an advantage. It takes whatever is in the center of the frame and makes it quite small. The opposite of that happens on the edges, where things get quite spread out. I spent most of one morning shooting in Union Station in Los Angeles, and I highly recommend this to any photographer! Not only did they let me use my tripod, but there is all kinds of cool people-watching along the way.My tripod was set up for an HDR of the interior, but I saw this couple walk in and start doing, well, whatever they are doing. And about three minutes later, I was drenched.I barely got this photo in time. I could see the storm coming across the beach towards us. About 60 seconds after I took this photo, you couldn't even see the islands. The worst part wasn't getting soaked -- it was having to run back to the car in the torrential downfall with all my equipment. I took this photo while I was outside another tower in the open air with Joe McNally. It was a great time.. It was also a bit scary.For this one, I took my 28-300 and turned it upright to portrait mode and zoomed in quite tight. StuckInCustoms > The Pier in Santa MonicaAfter we finished shooting down on the beach, we moved the photowalking party up to the pier. There was just an edge of light left when I took this photo.The dock is in two parts. The first part has the amusement park and the second part extends further out into the sea. Sometimes docks aren’t so great for night shots because they are shaky and move with the waves. But this one was pretty solid — I suppose because of the rides and whatnot that also need to be stable.
