StuckInCustoms > Sitting in the BreezeThis is the other area of Amateras where we spent most of our time. We would make drinks and then relax outside and read books in the breeze. There is that warm ocean breeze that is not too cold or two hot. In the evenings, it did get a little cool, but it was still nice to sit out here and read books. I finished off two while I was here. They were both about time. One was called “The End of Time” by Julian Barbour — quite a nice book about physics. StuckInCustoms > Rain in the highland cliffsThe rain in Hawaii never seemed to stop!But, the good news was that it kept everything green and glowing with a golden hue in the daytime. There is that kind of “wetness” of a place that is hard to describe. I hope I caught it okay here…Tom and I walked around this farm for a while before we were approached by people working there. They wanted to figure out what the heck we were doing, but once they saw we were just innocent photographers, they let us go ahead and take photos. StuckInCustoms > Boat on Oahu BeachYou can drive along the beach for hours and hours in Oahu but miss what is actually there. Often times, there is a row of trees or houses that block the actual beach, but it’s hard to know what is just on the other side!Luckily, Tom and I walked through some of the fauna and found this scene. StuckInCustoms > Spanish Streets at NightThe old part of Ibiza is has a medieval layout where the inner city is ringed by a city curtain wall. Once inside, all the streets are narrow and twisty and lined with different kinds of stone. This looks back at the main entrance to the area.I haven’t spent as much time in some of these ancient old cities as I would like. There is a lot of satisfaction in setting up for shots in these areas. You CAN miss a lot of things down there, but not if you are right along this main road. StuckInCustoms > A Day of PhotographyAnd speaking of the subject matter at large – I decided to spend one day out of my birthday weekend out on a little photo adventure. I jumped in the car and drive towards Pyramid Lake just past Glenorchy.I was probably out for 10 hours, and I came back with 3 photos I really liked. That seems like a lot of time for just 3 photos… and, on the other side, I’m glad I came back with 3 photos! :)All in all, I took about 70 photos (many were brackets of 9 because I was out in the snowy conditions at one point. StuckInCustoms > Road to the Inn I have strange feelings sometimes when approaching new hotels. I stay in a lot of them, but there are certain times of the day and night when you are going some place quite foreign and you’re just not sure what it will be like.A good example is this place here in Iceland, where everything can be doubly strange. I’ve had many strange experiences from sleeping in school classrooms (they are converted to hotels in the summer) to having to wake up someone at 2 AM to let me into a room.Even though Iceland is so mountainous, sometimes there are wide open plains where you can see the destination from miles and miles away as you get closer. And all the strange thoughts (especially very late at night) go racing through your head. StuckInCustoms > The Vastness I know that photographers generally are especially mindful of things and scenes around them, and I wonder if landscape photographers are especially mindful of clouds.I look at them like a Native American preparing for a reaping of the maize. I’ve really come to understand and respect a wide variety of cloud patterns, even though there are a few configurations and situations that evade me. I really enjoy being able to predict cloud patterns for the next several hours. I’m not always right, but it is a fun game to play with myself.These humid, windy skies in Virgin Gorda made for a tumultuous tableau. Everything would change quite quickly, so it was harder to predict several hours away. StuckInCustoms > The Downtown Lights From Afar Tom and I drove up to the top of a dormant volcano to look down on Waikiki late one night. It was a rather long day of being out in the rain and muck — and it was still raining when we arrived here. By this time, my D3X was in serious malfunction mode!
