StuckInCustoms > The Edge of Virgin GordaI wish my D800 had a articulating screen! It’s so hard to shoot close to the ground, isn’t it? I mean, Live View helps a little bit, but it’s so tough to really know for sure. There are certain positions you can get in (I call them the camera sutra) that can be crazy-painful. I’ve gotten a little better over the years, since I simply kind of “know” what the picture will look like without having to gorilla-pod my neck…- Trey RatcliffRead the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

StuckInCustoms > The Lupines at SunsetSo here is a cool thing about this photo that one might not guess. This was taken with a Sony NEX-7 and the kit lens! Yes, the kit lens. This was shot on Baker Beach in San Francisco one evening when I was exploring…. I was double-fisting it with two cameras… and I saw this quick scene so I went for this experimental shot.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Sitting in the BreezeThis is the other area of Amateras where we spent most of our time. We would make drinks and then relax outside and read books in the breeze. There is that warm ocean breeze that is not too cold or two hot. In the evenings, it did get a little cool, but it was still nice to sit out here and read books. I finished off two while I was here. They were both about time. One was called “The End of Time” by Julian Barbour — quite a nice book about physics. The other was called “The Fabric of Reality” which puts a different take on the whole thing…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Rain in the highland cliffsThe rain in Hawaii never seemed to stop! But, the good news was that it kept everything green and glowing with a golden hue in the daytime. There is that kind of “wetness” of a place that is hard to describe. I hope I caught it okay here…Tom and I walked around this farm for a while before we were approached by people working there. They wanted to figure out what the heck we were doing, but once they saw we were just innocent photographers, they let us go ahead and take photos. That was nice… once people figure out that photographers are mostly harmless, they let us have free reign! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Los Angeles from the Hollywood Hills“The Hollywood Hills” is one of those areas I had always heard about but never visited. I always wanted to get a photo of them, but, how, exactly, does one do that?Well once I finally found the area and started exploring it, I decided to try to find a unique shot. It snuck up on me one afternoon while jogging through some trails along the top. I saw this scene and decided to return later, when the time was right.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Towering ShipsSo I got down to the end of the pier and aimed the 14-24 pretty high. There’s no way to get around the “leaning lines” — but that all adds to the overall effect. And, believe, me, standing down there, you feel the immense weight of them all about to topple over.If you look up at the Disney Fantasy on the right, you can see where the waterslide juts off the edge of the ship…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Boat on Oahu BeachYou can drive along the beach for hours and hours in Oahu but miss what is actually there. Often times, there is a row of trees or houses that block the actual beach, but it’s hard to know what is just on the other side!Luckily, Tom and I walked through some of the fauna and found this scene. It was all set up so perfect — and there I was with my camera (which isn’t THAT much of a surprise).- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Alcatraz at SunsetI was over on Treasure Island one evening taking photos when I saw the sun sinking through a lot of moisture in the air. I also saw Alcatraz out in the water, so I jumped in the car to drive around and find a spot where everything lined up together. That was a great night!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Spanish Streets at NightThe old part of Ibiza is has a medieval layout where the inner city is ringed by a city curtain wall. Once inside, all the streets are narrow and twisty and lined with different kinds of stone. This looks back at the main entrance to the area.I haven’t spent as much time in some of these ancient old cities as I would like. There is a lot of satisfaction in setting up for shots in these areas. It’s nice to take my time and compose this and that… I find great enjoyment in this!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > My Kea Camper on the South IslandThis was one of the prettiest parts of the drive to Milford Sound. You can’t miss it. You CAN miss a lot of things down there, but not if you are right along this main road. This is probably one of the most majestic valleys I’ve ever seen. - Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > A Day of PhotographyAnd speaking of the subject matter at large – I decided to spend one day out of my birthday weekend out on a little photo adventure. I jumped in the car and drive towards Pyramid Lake just past Glenorchy.I was probably out for 10 hours, and I came back with 3 photos I really liked. That seems like a lot of time for just 3 photos… and, on the other side, I’m glad I came back with 3 photos! :)All in all, I took about 70 photos (many were brackets of 9 because I was out in the snowy conditions at one point. There is one more set still unprocessed… I have my fingers crossed that it will come out okay!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Road to the Inn I have strange feelings sometimes when approaching new hotels. I stay in a lot of them, but there are certain times of the day and night when you are going some place quite foreign and you’re just not sure what it will be like.A good example is this place here in Iceland, where everything can be doubly strange. I’ve had many strange experiences from sleeping in school classrooms (they are converted to hotels in the summer) to having to wake up someone at 2 AM to let me into a room.Even though Iceland is so mountainous, sometimes there are wide open plains where you can see the destination from miles and miles away as you get closer. And all the strange thoughts (especially very late at night) go racing through your head. It’s all kind of Twilight Zone-ish.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Vastness I know that photographers generally are especially mindful of things and scenes around them, and I wonder if landscape photographers are especially mindful of clouds.I look at them like a Native American preparing for a reaping of the maize. I’ve really come to understand and respect a wide variety of cloud patterns, even though there are a few configurations and situations that evade me. I really enjoy being able to predict cloud patterns for the next several hours. I’m not always right, but it is a fun game to play with myself. These humid, windy skies in Virgin Gorda made for a tumultuous tableau. Everything would change quite quickly, so it was harder to predict several hours away. But I did have a good feeling about this time in particular…I kept a few of the islands in the bottom of the frame so you could get a sense of perspective to see how huge the clouds actually were.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Downtown Lights From Afar Tom and I drove up to the top of a dormant volcano to look down on Waikiki late one night. It was a rather long day of being out in the rain and muck — and it was still raining when we arrived here. By this time, my D3X was in serious malfunction mode! I could only get Live View to work, and I had to use that to take photos…. not exactly ideal conditions!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

A Night at the Museum

This is one of the final photos I was able to squeeze off before the security guards nabbed me. Arg! I wanted to get so many more… but you know, you know… it’s the same old story.

Anyway, if you ever visit Paris, you absolutely need to make it over here to the museum of natural history. It’s known to the locals, but not to visitors. All the other sites in Paris are great, of course… but if you have a penchant for science and a love of crazy interior design, this is the place for you!
