StuckInCustoms > Alone in the Death Star I’m sure the architects had fun with this building! In most ways, it’s a completely inefficient use of space. There is a large atrium with all sorts of strange catwalks and ramps and bridges that go from one useless place to another! But that is also what makes it very cool… almost Escher-like.This is from the Tokyo International Forum, and if you click on the Tokyo link below, you are sure to see many more photos from this place!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Soft Sunset over the Gentle Stream Every time I visit this little stream in the northern part of Iceland, it seems exactly the same. It makes me wonder if it ever gets high or low or just flows perfectly all the time.If it does flow perfectly like this all the time, I’d be tempted to build a house right over it! Wouldn’t it be cool to have a perfect stream just flow right through your home?- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Solar Storm Hits Queenstown I’ve been awake for two days.It all started yesterday after I put the kids to bed. I got a Facebook message from Stefan Haworth. It turns out that he and Eden Brackstone were headed out for a little viewing of the big solar storm that was hitting the atmosphere. Down thisaway, it’s called the Aurora Australis. Since I’ve never before seen one (despite countless attempts in Iceland), I was ready to suit up!And it turns out that one of the best places we saw them was right here in Queenstown! I had a decent view from the place I am staying here at The Commonage, but the clouds were pretty heavy. So, we drove down along Lake Wakatipu until we were just past Wye creek. I got out of the car, let my eyes adjust, then saw colored shafts of light shooting up through the edge of our snow-globe. It wasn’t like I expected! It’s…. hard to explain.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Footprints in the SandMy RRS Tripod: “You promised you would walk beside me forever, and I would always see our footprints together in the sand.”Me: “During your times of trial and suffering, when you only see one set of footprints, that is when I carried you, my son. That is when I carried you.” - Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Sphere of Influence I thought this sphere was so unusual when I saw it the first time. There’s a radar under there, but the design of the housing is pretty cool and modern… And it sits in the middle of an awesome adults-only swimming pool on the front of the Disney Fantasy… very cool.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Skeletal Hallway While walking through one of the amazing Gaudi homes in Barcelona, we came upon this unique hallway. I didn’t have a tripod for my full-on treatment, so I did my best to see what I could get with a single RAW. Frankly, whenever I am forced into this situation, I’m still pretty happy with what comes from that single shot. There’s a slight chance I’m going back to Barcelona later this year… if so, I’m going to schedule more time with Gaudi! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > What the Ancient Seamariners Saw Imagine seeing this if you were one of the great sea explorers of yore! This is the entrance to Milford Sound from the Tasman Sea. It would have been so amazing to come across this and wonder what it was like up inside the fjord. And then, the captain could just decide to sail up inside and land some boats on the shore. Maybe if they were a little hungry, they could even grab a few Moas and cook ‘em up. After a long sea voyage, nothing goes down smoother than a Moa.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Swimming Through the Grotto The swimming pool at the Aulani (a Disney hotel) on Oahu is pretty incredible. I only saw the place at night, so I’m not sure how it looks during the day. But it looks like it was designed just so that it would look awesome at night! It’s attached to one of those lazy rivers that bends around this way and that. I do like lazy rivers, but I don’t like all the Disney lifeguards watching me on every bend. What if I want a little lazy-river privacy? Well, I guess there’s no need for that with kids about and such.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Rainbow over the Lake in Queenstown I had just dropped my kids off for their first day of school. I had my D3S with me because I was taking photos of that momentous event, so it was still with me when I went downtown to sign some papers. When I got downtown, the rain was just starting to slow down, but there was still a thick morning dampness in the air over the lake, and a full rainbow was right in front of me. I didn’t have the right equipment with me to get the rainbow all at once, so I went through the steps listed above! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Boulders at the Beach This is quite a unique beach, isn’t it?I came down to these boulders many times per day. The light was different, and on this particular evening, I was hoping for a good sunset. The kharma must have built up because everything came out quite nice…And even better, the water was warm enough to wade into…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Sunrise Across the SeasThere must be something about the warm air around the equator and the cool sea that churns up these clouds. No matter the morning, there was a new configuration of clouds and light. I got in the habit of setting up my tripod close to the balcony at Amateras so it would be ready in the morning. This minimized my morning wake-up pain. Note that VERY FEW of my sunrise photos are so easy to get… most involve a lot more bodily-morning-travel to find a good spot!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The View And here is one of the thousands of photos I took from the balcony at sunset one evening. The whole family was just getting into the car to drive down to The Cow for dinner, and then this sunset started to happen! So, it was one of those elongated, “Oh just wait five more minutes!” while I kept extending it another five minutes as the sky got better and better! We ended up being delayed about half an hour to dinner, as you would expect. But once the kids had their giant loaf of garlic bread, everything was good again!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > Girl in Austin on BikeWhen I was at South by Southwest, we had an amazing photowalk downtown. After the whole thing was over, I spent about an hour saying hello to people and having my picture taken and this sort of thing. I do always enjoy that… having extra time to meet people is always nice. After I was done, I went into the Driskill to get a few things I left behind. I went out of the lobby to get into Curtis’ car to whisk me away back home when I saw this girl riding one of those pedicabs. I thought she was kinda cute, so I grabbed this quick shot.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Third Tree When you have three tree photos that you adore, how can you choose an order in which to publish them? I don’t know! I figured that if I love all of them, then random is a good an order as necessary. I go through various levels of this every night when I put together the daily post for the next day. The selection process is fairly mentally grueling! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
StuckInCustoms > The Ruins on the CoastOne early morning, Curtis and I woke up to drive to the other side of the island and explore these old ruins. I don’t know if you can say that one set of ruins are in better shape than others, but these were still pretty awesome (even though they were in ruins)!I did something a little different with the processing here, mostly related to adjusting the color of the shadows in Lightroom.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest at the Stuck in Customs blog.
