The Lonely but Beautiful Path I have a lot of alone time. When I am out shooting, I am totally in my own world. In fact, I'm even double-in-my-own-world because I have my iPod on and I drift away into pure right-brain mode. It's quite nice, in a way, because I do achieve a zen-like peace where time does not matter.I've worked with a few photographers that will copy and paste a sky from one photo and put it into another photo. I don't do that stuff - that is waaaay too much editing for me. All the clouds and colors you see are true and wonderfully there. I even sat with a guy once who would take a perfect moon out of one photo and paste it into another! I simply can't bring myself to do anything like that... it's just too over-the-top!Anyway, I hope you enjoy this new photo from Florida... StuckInCustoms > The Overgrown Crypt Here is another shot from La Recoleta cemetery in Argentina. Every crypt seemed to have its own story... I wish I could have heard the tales of each one. But, on the plus side, I did have my over-active imagination to fill in the blanks.All of my shots from La Recoleta (click on the "Buenos Aires" tag here in the post to see the others) were handheld because my tripod was lost with the rest of my luggage. Usually, I never check my tripod for just that very reason! I just don't really trust those people... StuckInCustoms > The Hill at Sunset On one of the first hikes into Patagonia, I was greeted by a very interesting sunset. And what do you know -- I had my camera! Shocker, I know. But I am often at places where there are beautiful sunsets and I have no camera. This is always a bit frustrating to me in one way - in another - I justify it by thinking of the thousands of good sunsets every day all around the world... I can't be at them all! StuckInCustoms > The Homestead I took my campervan from 90 KPH to 0 as soon as I saw this place on the side of the road! This caused some mild excitement with my two kids that were nestled in their clubhouse above my driver's seat. This was a move they came to expect over the coming days.It seemed just like the kind of place that I needed to shoot. The old house was abandoned and falling apart. So, of course, after I took shots of the outside, I ventured inside to really have a look. StuckInCustoms > The Majesty (my largest photo ever) This is one of the largest pieces I have ever made; the giant TIFF is about 21,000 pixels across (this one I uploaded is only 15,000 pixels across and has been downgraded to JPEG to fit inside the draconian upload requirements). I shot it one cool and crisp morning at Glacier National Park in this crystal clear lake that is fed by glacial runoff. It is comprised of 90 different photos that took a small eternity to mix together into an epic HDR. StuckInCustoms > Floating Through the Temple While in the north of India, I visited this Hindu temple. It was beautiful and decadent inside. I can't even imagine what it used to look like back in the day. The walls supposedly had inlaid jewels and other precious stones. StuckInCustoms > The Golden Gate Bridge at Dusk I had spent the previous night up in Napa, visiting my mom and grandmother. This was a long day with a stop in Petaluma to see Leo's operation, a fast hike through the Muir Woods, and then a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge to catch its majesty at sunset.I'm sure locals know this spot very well, but I found it thanks to Google Earth. I knew it would be a cool spot, but driving to these spots is always a bit sketchy when you have never been there before. It appeared to be a simple jog off Highway 1, and it actually was. It's nice when something that looks easy ends up actually being easy! This isn't usually the case. Even better, the wind wasn't howling a mile a minute, which I think can happen around here if you don't watch out!After I took this, I could hardly wait to get back home to process the final image. I don't know about y'all, but I find the post-processing just as fun as the actual shooting... StuckInCustoms > Deep in the South of New Zealand I drove over 4,200 kilometers while there -- it was just a wonderful experience. Towards the end of the journey, we started making deeper and deeper into the southern island, where things seemed to get more wonderful and wild every kilometer.The weather was crazy the whole time! It would go from sunny to violent little storms to random winds to perfect calm. During one of those transition periods, I was halfway to Milford Sound by this beautiful little lake when this rainbow peeked out. I quickly got into position to capture it, but then realized I had on the wrong lens! The 12-24mm was okay, but this really called for the 24-70. StuckInCustoms > The Dock to Forever One of the advantages of going down all the side roads is that you get to find cool places! After leaving Nelson on the South Island, we found a little lake on the map that looked about perfect. After a few hours of meandering, we discovered this place was almost completely empty (just like every place else on the South Island!). Even better, there was a perfect little dock jutting out into the lake.I first took a bunch of shots with my 14-24mm lens... but it was not really getting the dock with the distant valley in the right way. So, I put on my 70-200mm, zoomed in almost all the way, then backed up quite a bit to get the compression effect of the valley. Remind me to post the other version someday so you can see the comparison! StuckInCustoms > Tokyo from a Window Tokyo is one of those cities that looks incredible from every angle and from every window!If you are like me, whenever you see a window, you sometimes act a bit like a dork and move your body and head in strange ways to "frame a photo". Do you do that? Maybe it's just me. StuckInCustoms > The Floods of Lago Argentina Towards the end of my trip in Argentina, we started exploring around the edges of some of the other towns. One of them had started growing towards the lake before it started to flood. There was a whole house community over here that had to be abandoned because of the lake. It seemed like a great and unusual place for photography.What you can't see in this photo is how HARD it was to get to this spot! I knew it would be a good angle, and the path looked just a little muddy. But, it was one of those muddy steps where you immediately sink in knee-deep. You know the kind I mean. It's the kind of step when you immediately feel soft dutch-chocolate-mud seep up and over and into your hiking boots. And then there was, of course, the horrible mud-sucking sound as I tried to yank one leg out while another was quickly sinking. StuckInCustoms > Riverfall Even though I know the science inside out, the idea that one hemisphere swings into Autumn while the other turns into Spring always is a very cool concept to me! It's so strange to go from the southern hemisphere where the colors are just starting to change to the deep oranges and reds -- and then arrive in the northern hemisphere where everything is just starting to bloom!This is a perfect little river down in Argentina. I've worked with a few photographers that will copy and paste a sky from one photo and put it into another photo. I don't do that stuff - that is waaaay too much editing for me. All the clouds and colors you see are true and wonderfully there. I even sat with a guy once who would take a perfect moon out of one photo and paste it into another! I simply can't bring myself to do anything like that... it's just too over-the-top!
