From The Top of the Great Wall
Far in the north, this area of the Great Wall has been overgrown with vegetation. Birds and little creatures are all over the place. A path has been made over time, and it weaves in and out of these overgrown bits. The wall is so wide that it's sometimes easy to forget that you are standing on top of a huge structure.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Opposite Hotel
What an amazing hotel in the heart of Beijing! Thank you all for the suggestion to go here... I love this kind of neo-modern-techno architecture, so it was a real treat to run around and take photos everywhere. I was like a man possessed :)This is the lower pool area. It was dark in there for sure. I used a tripod to make sure the exposure was long enough to get the effect I was going for.The video on the right is from another part of the hotel... up in my room... where you can see some cool things as well as what was in my bag.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read more, including an exciting announcement for Android fans, at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Bird’s Nest From Above I was at the top of this tower late one night in Beijing. It’s a cool tower (I don’t have a photo of it), but it’s the kind of tower that will look awful in about 10 years. Anyway, this photo is not about the tower. The famous Bird’s Nest stadium was spread out beneath me. When I saw this scene, I knew I was going to shave off the top and the bottom. The bottom was kind of interesting. The top was dreadful. It’s a bit painful to take a photo when I know I’m going to be cutting out so much, but I do it quite often anyway.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Electric LA at Night I took this a few nights ago in Los Angeles. I’ve always wanted to get a good shot of the downtown action, and Stuck On Earth helped me get it.Luckily, I saw a few hints of this kind of a shot from other photographers that had geotagged shots in the area. I went out there with Tom Anderson and we spent a few hours exploring the area. We got countless great shots and this was the first one I processed.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Sound that of Clattering Wood in the Breeze
Upon entering the oldest part of this ancient town, I passed by these tiny shingles that hung in the air. They made a delightful sound as the wind went through them, and it kind of set the mood for the rest of the exploration.

This woman was holding an umbrella to shield the sun. It did get a little steamy from time to time... I wish I had one too!

There was only one light, from her torch that she held while she rode by on a bike at full speed. I remember that the flame made a sound. It was the close sound of a small sail catching wind. It would muffle itself, then catch wind again. The gentle rumble of the flame reached a crescendo as she passed. I thought it lit her face so nicely, and her mask was so mysterious. I have no idea who she was, and she probably didn’t want anyone to know who she was. That was very nice in a world without secrets, I thought.
The Lighthouse Here is another photo taken during my Thanksgiving holiday trip to visit family on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.Even though I spent most of the time with family doing family-stuff, I did head out on occasion to take a few photos. I never got to visit the various piers… but the wonderful lighthouses are great subjects for photography… and the skies worked nicely too!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Roanoke Island Lighthouse I’m visiting family for Thanksgiving here on Roanoke Island, and I went out last night after a storm to take some photos. This area is known for beautiful lighthouses, so I put myself on a little mission.I didn’t initially plan on going out to take photos. It started with a jog on the beach a bit before sunset. I was jogging north, listening to good music, and the sun was on me. But, ahead of me, the clouds were dark and scary, like the ones circling Mordor. One of those surreal scenes unfolded in front of me… maybe you know the kind. The sun lit everything perfectly below the horizon, and above the horizon was heavy and foreboding. It was then that I decided that it would be an interesting night for photos! So I jogged back to the house, got my rig, and headed out. All this while, I was still in shorts and a t-shirt, which were now wet with rain since the clouds had come to cover me up on the way home. I drove to this nearby lighthouse, but there was no good way to get this angle. The trees in front were about eight feet high, and there was no break in them… the only thing I could do is pull my car over (a rented minivan), and climb up on top with my tripod. There are not many things more slippery than the top of a wet minivan! So, I’m sure I looked like quite a fool clambering my way up there… but up there I got.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Sunset from the Sky As I was landing in Lijiang, China, I saw this sunset out the window.I tried not to panic the other passengers as I quickly stood up and hauled my massive camera bag out of the overhead. I tried to be smooth as I ripped open the bag in a frenzied way. I tried not to be too loud as I grunted to pull out my giant camera and jam it into the window.I was hoping this was a good indication of a nice week of photography in Lijiang — and it was! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
