The Beautiful Beijing Airport This is a place where I never had trouble with a tripod. I didn't need any special permission... everyone just left me alone. I think that in China everyone is basically scared to death of the authorities, so this means the authorities don't really need to do much in the way of diligent "enforcement." And, there seemed to be no rules against photography, so it was easy to go hog-wild in this beautiful airport. This is another good reason to take your tripod with you on the plane... If it is checked down below, then there's nothing to do but eat Chili's Express or, the Chinese equivalent, KFC Express. (Yes, KFC is ALL OVER Asia for some reason...but some of you probably know this already!)- Trey RatcliffRead the rest of today's entry here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The People Mover

This is London, right?

I'm embarrassed to say I can't quite remember. I processed and edited this photo as part of a bigger trip. I'm too lazy to check the EXIF and cross-reference the dates... even though that would have taken less time than writing this sentence. But, instead, I'm saying it like this to let you know that sometimes my memory fades a bit. Some spots I remember perfect perfect perfect perfect... and others fade away and drift into others. I'm not sure why memory works like this... why there are some things that are perfect and some that are fuzzy. The way that memory works in this incomplete way is interesting to me.

The Barcelona Airport II This is another reason I like to get to airports early. Not only do I hate being rushed, but I like to take time to explore with my camera. Well, I guess that only is in the case where the airport happens to be particularly beautiful, like the one here in Barcelona. I always start out extremely rushed, because I picture security closing down on me from every angle. So, my first shot is usually rushed and not perfectly centered. Then, if the guards don't gang-tackle me like I'm streaking at Yankee Stadium, then I keep adjusting my position and the camera until things are more and more aligned and composed to my satisfaction. This one was even a little bit tilted, but I fixed that bit with the crop tool later in Photoshop (as people saw). - Trey Ratcliff Read more here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Barcelona Airport This amazing airport in Barcelona was my launching point for a very long flight through Helsinki to Berlin. I am actually the kind of guy that likes to get to airports super-early. First, I don't like the stress; second I like to explore. A lot of these international airports are these architectural wonders. I think most people just drift through them, oblivious to how awesome they are... but not me. I love 'em!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Terminal You guys know I love the Asian airports. I can't quite figure out why they are all so awesome. I suppose that the government just pours a ton of money into them. But, I don't really understand the economics of airports, even though I spend a lot of time in them. I know the airlines have to lease the gates, so that provides a regular income, but probably not enough to pay back the billion dollar pricetag to get it built. I'm pretty sure there is a lot of incestuous stuff that goes on... I know some giant Asian airlines are subsidized by the government, which in turn give money to airports that are owned partially by the government, and it all gets more messy from there. I suppose I'm just used to the government doing everything badly here. This is one of the smaller terminals in Beijing. The main terminal is huge, and you get to this one after you pass through security. The floors are so glossy, I feel like wearing ice skates!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Amazing Airport I went in and out of this airport in Beijing a few times. Some might argue a few too many times. That some might be me. It’s an absolutely beautiful airport. It was so amazing in size and scope that I could not figure out what part to present to you first! But we’ll start with this one, at the entrance to the international terminal. This is near the dropoff area for the international departures. It’s the bit where you roll in your bags and try to figure out where the heck to find the counter for Air Sheep.By the way, I took a ton of photos all over the Beijing airport. No one ever gave me any grief for using my tripod. As you might expect, HDR in this place is an absolute blast — and not having to worry about getting in trouble for using a tripod is even better!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
One Plane Alone at the End of the Night Here we are at Santa Monica Airport deep in the night. It was quiet. And peaceful. I spend a massive amount of time at airports. I'm usually totally alone, and, most of the time, this is perfectly all right. I've developed an ever-changing internal dialog that keeps me mentally stimulated at all times. I'm glad no one can read my thoughts... surely they would find the cacophonous chorus to be the height of lunacy. And then, when things finally bubble over, well, it is nice to have a kindred spirit around.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
American Airlines at DFW I thought, to commemorate this entry on connecting people, that I'd include a photo of an airplane from one of the busiest airports in the world - DFW in Dallas. This is the same plane that I flew to Tokyo on just recently. It was shot from high above in the Admiral's Club. It was an awfully stormy day, and I was worried that maybe the flight wouldn't go off on time! We were delayed a few hours... but that gave me plenty of time to set up all my equipment in there like a dork!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Underground Peoplemover to the International Terminal I found this on the way to Hong Kong… so I stopped for a quick shot while security eyed me with suspicion… But they have those cool TSA badges that makes them look all official and everything, but I just ignored them.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
