The Solar Storm Hits Queenstown I’ve been awake for two days.It all started yesterday after I put the kids to bed. I got a Facebook message from Stefan Haworth. It turns out that he and Eden Brackstone were headed out for a little viewing of the big solar storm that was hitting the atmosphere. Down thisaway, it’s called the Aurora Australis. Since I’ve never before seen one (despite countless attempts in Iceland), I was ready to suit up!And it turns out that one of the best places we saw them was right here in Queenstown! I had a decent view from the place I am staying here at The Commonage, but the clouds were pretty heavy. So, we drove down along Lake Wakatipu until we were just past Wye creek. I got out of the car, let my eyes adjust, then saw colored shafts of light shooting up through the edge of our snow-globe. It wasn’t like I expected! My Kea Camper on the South IslandThis was one of the prettiest parts of the drive to Milford Sound. You can’t miss it. You CAN miss a lot of things down there, but not if you are right along this main road. The Rocks Near and FarA few nights ago I went for a walk along the water’s edge here in Queenstown. About one out of ten nights (or, as far as I have measured), there is a clear night with a bright pink light that shoots up from behind those mountains. It’s really quite a sight.I went down to the edge of the lake and buried my tripod legs in the frigid, icy-clear water. Lonely Tree Aflame After having a great flat white with Tim and Bel, Abe (my intern for the winter/summer) and I went down to the lake. I picked out some trees I wanted to re-visit in the evening light. As I was driving around, I got an idea… it was dark and blue and I thought about what it would look like if the tree was instantly on fire… so I gave Abe some specific instructions and a secret signal.I set up for the shot with the 14-24mm, prepared the timer, then made the secret signal to Abe. Mountains at Lake Wanaka Now that I am getting a bit more settled in New Zealand, I’ve begun to make a few short road trips. We haven’t found a house for sure, but we are getting pretty serious in that hunt! It’s a fun process, and we have many good candidates to choose from. Once the whole family gets settled, it will make everything a bit easier with the photography!A few days ago, we took a mini-road trip to Lake Wanaka. It’s only about 2 hours away, and the mountains are pretty crazy. Sailing Away to Akaroa Thanks again for all the recommendations! So many of you recommended that we visit Akaroa on our visit to New Zealand, and it was a great suggestion.You can walk along and see most of the commercial part and the harbor in less than an hour. One end is a long dock where they launch a few ships per day. Just as I got out to the end, this sailboat was pulling away from the dock.This photo came from a single RAW file. The Long Road to New Zealand This is one of countless beautiful roads that crisscross New Zealand. I'm afraid I've forgotten exactly where I was when I took this photo! I know that is very lame, but I bet people around here can help me pinpoint the area.As far as the camera settings, this is the kind of shot you can get with something called "compression," a method where you use a zoom lens and zoom in quite far. Beautiful Akaroa This is a great town over on the coast of New Zealand. I only spent a short time there, but I'd like to get back. I think it was one of THE most recommended places in NZ, and that's saying a lot, because the recommendations come fast and furious there. The mountains border the lake in Queenstown, but right before they dip into the deep water, a gentle dollop of green hills present themselves. They are those soft kind of New Zealand hills - the kind that look like you could just take a giant thumb and mush them around into one shape or another.
