The Royal Stairs I imagine all sorts of royalty going up and down these stairs. I wonder what it was like, back in the day, when people would come over to the chateau… arriving on horse-drawn carriages and the like… coming in to ascend these stairs… I wish we had video footage from back then. It would be so interesting.Maybe someone will invent a quantum-time video capture device. Then we could set it up on the stairs and dial it back to the mid 1800′s to see who went up and down the stairs. This reminds me a little of what my little 7-year-old girl said. She was looking at some old photos from the 20′s. She said, “You know dad? Like in the olden days? Like when everyone used to dress in black and white?”- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Mysterious Places of Paris Isn’t this room amazing? It’s not in the main part of the Paris Opera House, but it had the most ornate and Inception-esque room I’ve seen in a while. I took this photo while in the middle of experimenting with the Nikon fisheye lens. It seemed to fit the bill for these ornate grand locations that are still in a relatively confined space. - Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Where the Impressionists Haunted the Streets Montmartre, in the north of Paris, is a very artsy place and I would love to open a little photography studio there, even if it is a bit touristy now. I don't think they had neon paint-palettes hanging in the streets when it was frequented by Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and the whole cast of bohemian characters.I'm halfway through a book now called "The Judgement of Paris", about all these guys had to go through to get their paintings shown in the Salon. Old-school judges would only approve paintings that showed historical scenes and the moral teachings of antiquity. Consequently, dozens of today's priceless paintings were stamped on the back with a big red "R" for "Refused".After the Impressionists' paintings were refused by the selection committee, the artists would gather at cafes here, drinking wine that tasted of "mountwash and soot", and lament about the state of the art, so to speak.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Sleeping in Downtown Dallas What do you think is happening in this photo? It’s full of secrets, like Laura Palmer…We had a tiny, unannounced PhotoWalk in Dallas last week. Hello to those of you that came!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Hearst Tomb Thomas Hawk brought me to this cemetery. He always takes me to the most romantic places. He remarked (and he is right) that he is surprised that Hearst has such a “small” tomb. It does seem rather understated, compared to the other monstrosities he built. But maybe he’s just being a little bit humble in his tomb. It’s hard to say…This photo was pretty much pitch black with a little bit of light that would collect over time. This is what I got out of a 30 second exposure at f/6.7.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read this entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Eiffel Tower Through Art Oh darn, I hear you saying. Another photo of the Eiffel Tower. I know I know… I’m sorry… hehe.Actually, you should see my Lightroom. I have so many interesting shots of the tower that I can’t hardly stand it. I’ve only processed a small percentage of them. Every time I dip my toe into that “unprocessed” category, I get all excited again.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Dinner at the Post Ranch Inn
This is the second photo I have released from the Post Ranch Inn (first one here). It's such a beautiful place, and, while not exploring the property, we were busy looking forward to a great dinner. Just outside the restaurant is this earthy sculpture and waterfall. It was very nice the way the evening light came and refracted through the water... I don't think I've ever been able to watch the sunset through a sheet of water, so it was quite nice.

The Airship Isabella III
During SXSW, I ended up at a party that had a pretty big steampunk contingent, which is of course very cool to me. I thought I had some good steampunk stuff from Burning Man until I saw these guys...

This was at the Big Bang Bordello Party put on by True Ventures and Tunehopper. It was super-crowded, like most decent SXSW parties, and there was a raucous stage show with a bunch of gals in lingerie and stuff. Is it lame that I hung out with all the steampunk guys in the back? Yes, probably.

Many of them were crew from the Airship Isabella, and they had all kinds of inventive steam-powered goodies. What is Steampunk? Follow that link for the Wikipedia entry... and also, you may remember the Steampunk photo from Burning Man.
