The Bird of Moeraki We set up on the rocks of Moeraki just outside of Fleurs. There is this abandoned dock here that shoots out into the bay towards the sunset. I like this spot because it is one of the few places on the east coast I have found that points back west towards the sunset.Taking photos of birds is really really really hard. It just takes a lot of trial and timing! The Nest I took this photo while I was outside another tower in the open air with Joe McNally. It was a great time.. It was also a bit scary.For this one, I took my 28-300 and turned it upright to portrait mode and zoomed in quite tight. The Bird’s Nest From Above I was at the top of this tower late one night in Beijing. It’s a cool tower (I don’t have a photo of it), but it’s the kind of tower that will look awful in about 10 years. Anyway, this photo is not about the tower.The famous Bird’s Nest stadium was spread out beneath me. When I saw this scene, I knew I was going to shave off the top and the bottom. The bottom was kind of interesting. The top was dreadful. Morning Seagull over Vesuvius This was the morning that made me never question getting out of bed before sunrise again. It's always a painful thing to do, but once you get out there, it's usually worth it. Even if you don't get the perfect shot, you still have a nice early start to the day. I shot this in Naples, Italy, where the bay looks across to the cratered Vesuvius. This shot was an HDR taken from a single RAW, as you can tell from the seagull which was caught in flight. Moving subjects usually require the use of a single RAW file for the creation of the HDR. Morning Mist at the Lagoon This was shot in Stanley Park in Vancouver one morning. Vancouver always seems to be nice and cloudy, so the colorful trees around the park always stand out nicely. There was a giant swan floating nearby while I was walking around, so I took this single RAW and converted to HDR so I could be sure to get all the little colors in the trees and the various shades in the sky and water.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
