The Black Rock

When I was in Big Sur spending a few days at the Post Ranch Inn, one of the places I wanted to visit was this amazing beach not too far from there. I planned on getting there early so I would have time to set up. We got there a little too early, and the sun was too high in the sky. But we still took time to check out the scene. It was hellishly windy, but I did grab a this shot below before we retreated to a nearby cafe to get some hot chocolate before returning for the sunset. The sunset gave us some amazing light for a crazy ocean sunset, but I'll save that for a future day....

Icelandic Boy After Building Treehouse When I stayed at Helga's delightful farmhouse near a northern fjord in Iceland, her brother came over and brought his son. They built a treehouse in the backyard and filled it with all kinds of goodies -- all in one day! The sun was low, as it always is there that time of year. He was running around, silently playing in the back yard. I thought his eyes were so other-worldly blue that I just had to take a photo. This area was very close to the little town of Akureyri. It took me about three visits to this place before I was able to pronounce it correctly. I feel like a damned fool trying to say some of those Icelandic words!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Cartier on the Bund This was shot on the Bund in Shanghai inside a small but nice building that had a few high-end stores. I thought the chairs and couch had a nice texture and shape near the rich decor, so I had to set up for a quick shot!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Grand Pool I've taken quite a few photos of the fabulous Hearst Castle indoor pool. This is the one that it is nearby, just outdoors. The thing is enormous and perfect. I wonder if it ever gets used. So sad. Maybe they put on little pool parties here and there for the elite. Or maybe rappers rent it out and bring in a bunch of rap-video-girls to gyrate around the edges. I don't know. - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest of this entry, including a recap of the recent London photowalk, here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Our Night Under the Stars I'm in the middle of a great trip to a ranch in Montana that I'll never forget. The nights here are always strange and different. I've only gotten outside a few times to take photos, mostly because of inclement weather. - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Secret Meetings in Hollywood This photo was taken in Los Angeles (Santa Monica to be exact) after I got finished with one of those Hollywood Power-Lunches you always hear about. I'm not yet ready to talk about it... but I just wanted to put out a little teaser for you. I'll be sure to put out the full story when it is ready to be told. So, anyway, after the meeting I took my camera and tripod across a few streets over to the beach. I'm not sure, but I'm fairly certain this is where they filmed the opening to Three's Company. It's burned into some deep layer... strange bits of my 70's brain were firing away as I was walking down the coast. The palm trees and the blue sky -- they were so LA -- so I set up to grab a shot.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Parking in Tokyo During the workshop, Alfie found a cool spot for us all to visit. They had a bunch of beautiful cars parked under a bridge, and these were prime suspects for a bit of HDR treatment!Look at the license plate on that car! Cool - Number 7. I wonder how you get car number 7 in all of Tokyo. There was some discussion that these beautiful low-number cars were often mafia vehicles. I don't know if I believe that, but it certainly sounds cool!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Homestead I took my campervan from 90 KPH to 0 as soon as I saw this place on the side of the road! This caused some mild excitement with my two kids that were nestled in their clubhouse above my driver's seat. This was a move they came to expect over the coming days.It seemed just like the kind of place that I needed to shoot. The old house was abandoned and falling apart. So, of course, after I took shots of the outside, I ventured inside to really have a look. I got a ton of photos, and here is the first.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Azure Blue Indoor Pool at Hearst Castle I was able to get a private tour throughout Hearst - so that made for an amazing and long day!Thank goodness I had a mass of memory cards... I got so much footage it was crazy!I could have picked a bunch of shots to be the "first", but I thought this one was particularly wonderful. There are two enormous pools at Hearst Castle, and this is the indoor one. This is a nice vantage point because this spot is actually quite difficult to reach! There is no door behind me... so I had to "shimmy" along that edge you see... It was NARROW... the shimmy was like a video game, except while holding a $10,000 camera! Sketchy! But I just had to get over here because I could visualize the shot before it happened...Here's a cool fact about this pool. Nearby, there is a huge room that was intended for a gymnasium that Hearst never constructed. The State then made it usable for IT and Archive area, so the water cools the computers... wild, eh?- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
