Dragon Boats of Commoners on a Lonely Stream near Hangzhou On the weekend while in Shanghai, I was in the mood for an adventure, so I went down to the train station to buy a ticket to Hangzhou. This was the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty in the 12th century and it was in the middle of the Yangtze river delta. The royalty established a number of temples around West Lake, the dozens of tiny freshwater lakes that were created for the emperor. As I explored around, there were many beautiful things to be seen. Here is one of many more I have to bring you.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Lighthouse This is one desolate place. I was on the coast of Iceland where the sea and the wind were absolutely ripping their way past the lighthouse. I always imagine what it is like to be inside of one of those lighthouses, all night long through the winter. I can’t even envision what that would be like, and after only a short time there in the icy wind, I got the willies and was happy to get out of there.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Morning Seagull over Vesuvius This was the morning that made me never question getting out of bed before sunrise again. It's always a painful thing to do, but once you get out there, it's usually worth it. Even if you don't get the perfect shot, you still have a nice early start to the day. I shot this in Naples, Italy, where the bay looks across to the cratered Vesuvius. This shot was an HDR taken from a single RAW, as you can tell from the seagull which was caught in flight. Moving subjects usually require the use of a single RAW file for the creation of the HDR. Otherwise, there would be a staccato ghosting of the bird across the sunrise.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Rainy Season of Vancouver Vancouver was experiencing a major storm system. It made it rather tough to take pictures, but I did get a few in that I will post in coming weeks. This shot is across the harbor, looking back at downtown Vancouver.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Fourth on Lake Austin It was a tough night because I was on the edge of a bridge that was rumbling as cars went across. The evening was very windy, and there was a light driving rain right into my lens. I had to wipe down the lens after every few exposures and try to cup my hands over the top during the shot. This ended up being the first HDR photo to hang in the Smithsonian, and it made my mom very proud.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
