The Rocks Near and FarA few nights ago I went for a walk along the water’s edge here in Queenstown. About one out of ten nights (or, as far as I have measured), there is a clear night with a bright pink light that shoots up from behind those mountains. It’s really quite a sight.I went down to the edge of the lake and buried my tripod legs in the frigid, icy-clear water. The Starlight in Downtown Los Angeles Here is a crazy spot I found thanks to sweet sweet Stuck On Earth. I’ve been to downtown LA many times, and there are many good angles, but I think this one is just about one of the best.There was a lot of waiting around, however. I had to wait for big busses to pass me on either side so I could set up for the long exposure.Usually, I’ll take 5 exposures in these situations, but I do something a little special. I’ll take the quicker exposures right away (often 1 or 2 seconds). And then I’ll pause and wait for a bus or something before taking the longer exposures. I create the HDR then mask in the tail lights from the photos where I get the best trails. Magical Fog in San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge I recently drove across the bridge and up this little mountain road to try to find this shot. I started driving up a road I knew well, but it was closed. Closed! So I parked, got out my tripod, and hiked about a mile up this hill to get to this spot. It was a very cool night, but there was some strange inversion happening. Almost anywhere I stood on the side of the hill was a stead hotel-room 72-degrees. And there was zero wind. Waikiki at NightAnd during the photowalk, there were many great chances to take photos of the city. It was exciting for me — it was my first time to see the city at night. All the Oahu people were kind of used to it, I assume… But it was also exciting to have them all around.When I set up for these shots during the photowalks, it’s always extra-strange. Because I’m really trying to get a good shot, but I also know that a ton of people are watching me right there. And then I talk through my shot while I’m taking it. San Francisco Cemetery Right after I got into San Francisco, I went into the YouTube offices for a meeting. Their offices were quite cool! It wasn't entirely what I was expecting, but I don't know what I was expecting. The team there was nice and welcoming, and they were already fans, so that made it easy.Anyway, after the meeting, I went across the street (literally a 10 min walk!) over to this old cemetery that had charming trees scattered about. The Endless Night Streets of Tokyo The streets are like this all night long. So, how can you possibly go back to the hotel room? There's never a good breaking point. It is very very hard on my body here, actually, because I usually go back at the point of sheer exhaustion or hunger-breakdown. Darkness in the City Sometimes the art gets a little bit dark, yes? Blade Runner I was staying at my friend Tom’s house (see the post tomorrow!!!) in the Hollywood hills, and we decided to head off to one of the nearby trails that overlooks the city. The Lincoln Memorial I got this photo in a hurry. I bet I raised a few security alarms too because of my unusual behavior. I didn't have much time, so I had my wife drive nearby and park illegally on the curb for a few minutes. She wasn't a fan of that, but let's not talk about this right now. So, I jumped out of the car, hauled my tripod out of the trunk, and dashed across the green hill towards the memorial.
