The Crazy Colors of Death Valley I had no idea Death Valley would be so full of colors! Of course, the HDR process takes the existing colors and really helps them to stand out… and, as everyone knows, that’s perfectly cool with me!I was close to this area back in college when I used to have a double-major in geophysics and computer-science. I ended up dropping the geo bit of it because of a fight with the professor, but I’ve always kept my fascination with rocks. I don’t know enough about everything I see… like, when I see this below, I have a few ideas on what probably made it like this, but I don’t know for sure. A Moving Sunset When the sun started going down in Milford Sound, I figured I was going to start using up a lot of memory cards. I’m still using those RAW Steel cards that are 16GB each. The D800 has been filling up my cards pretty quickly, so I’ve been thinking about upgrading to 32GB. Yosemite in Late AfternoonI spent about a week in Yosemite, and every day had slightly different light. I was quite sad there was no snow the entire time, but I am excited to go back and see it!Even though there was no snow, I was quite cold. I tried out a new set of gloves which were quite crappy. I think the only kind of situation I like when it is cold is those mittens that flip up so I can use my fingers. Colorful Cambodia Many of my Cambodia photos ended up going in more of the monochromatic direction. I like the black & white look + sepia treatments. They make it all seem sort of timeless and nice. But when I was processing this one, I decided to have the sunrise colors shine through.I remember at this point in the morning, my lens was finally fog-free. This was a hard lesson to learn, but now I no longer go from AC environments to muggy outdoors in the same way. The Digital Aurora Borealis There's not many places where you can get a colorful sky in the middle of the night. China seems to be one of the best places to have these strange digital phenomenon. This place is called "The Place." It ranks right up there with some of the other awful names of Chinese locations. They should hire a poet or two so these places can sound more exotic. The Falls of Yellowstone This is a very famous waterfall in Yellowstone National Park. I was there smack dab in the middle of the day, which is just about the worst time to take photos. The Silent Horse in the Fog Every night around 2 AM in Iceland was like a dream.I'm always enjoyed staying up late... As Sarah McLachlan says, "Night is my companion."Sometimes, after midnight is when things really start to flow, so my two-week sleep reversal of staying up all night to drive around Iceland was a trippy experience. Chihuly in Space I know you guys don't get tired of the Chihuly pieces, and neither do I! In fact, I like this one so much that I use it as my desktop wallpaper. Just as much thought goes into lighting these as it does the creation. I always wonder if he has the "lighting scenario" in mind when forming the piece and its colors. Or maybe, it's just so awesome and naturally formed that it looks good under any kind of light. Heck, it would probably even look good in a 7-11 at 1 AM when all the pasty-lonely people stumble in for a Big Gulp and a Snickers.
