The Old Temple of Lore The shapes of many SE Asian temples mimic the closed lotus flower. Once I found this out, it was incredibly obvious and I saw them everywhere. I did try to find a photo of a closed lotus flower floating in water alongside the temple, but that plan never really worked out.- Trey RatcliffRead the rest, including some stuff on the new app, here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Mysterious Creatures Among Us While in the southern town of Lixiang, I came upon this creature in the evening. Maybe you know the legend of this... maybe it is better to make up your own legend than to have me tell you everything about it... or, perhaps one of you intrepid explorers in the community can tell us all what is going on here!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Digital Aurora Borealis
There's not many places where you can get a colorful sky in the middle of the night. China seems to be one of the best places to have these strange digital phenomenon.

This place is called "The Place." It ranks right up there with some of the other awful names of Chinese locations. They should hire a poet or two so these places can sound more exotic. I'd be happier if it was called "Tomorrow Sky" or "The Sea of Matrix."

The Canals of Lijiang at Night
There must be a hundred little canals spread here and there through the old town. There are so many opportunities for photos! This is what we call a target-rich environment.

This is the town I was in with Tom Anderson -- every night we explored a new area. It was an amazing time... I can't wait to go back some day!

The Lighthouse Here is another photo taken during my Thanksgiving holiday trip to visit family on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.Even though I spent most of the time with family doing family-stuff, I did head out on occasion to take a few photos. I never got to visit the various piers… but the wonderful lighthouses are great subjects for photography… and the skies worked nicely too!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Roanoke Island Lighthouse I’m visiting family for Thanksgiving here on Roanoke Island, and I went out last night after a storm to take some photos. This area is known for beautiful lighthouses, so I put myself on a little mission.I didn’t initially plan on going out to take photos. It started with a jog on the beach a bit before sunset. I was jogging north, listening to good music, and the sun was on me. But, ahead of me, the clouds were dark and scary, like the ones circling Mordor. One of those surreal scenes unfolded in front of me… maybe you know the kind. The sun lit everything perfectly below the horizon, and above the horizon was heavy and foreboding. It was then that I decided that it would be an interesting night for photos! So I jogged back to the house, got my rig, and headed out. All this while, I was still in shorts and a t-shirt, which were now wet with rain since the clouds had come to cover me up on the way home. I drove to this nearby lighthouse, but there was no good way to get this angle. The trees in front were about eight feet high, and there was no break in them… the only thing I could do is pull my car over (a rented minivan), and climb up on top with my tripod. There are not many things more slippery than the top of a wet minivan! So, I’m sure I looked like quite a fool clambering my way up there… but up there I got.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
New York, Yellow Cab
Here is one of my favorite areas of New York. It's right by the famous Flatiron building -- but I obviously did not shoot in that direction here.

There's often a nice traffic flow, and it makes for a fun experiment to time out the traffic. Since I shoot from -2 to +2., I try to predict when the middle exposure will in the right spot to get the right amount of blur on that photo. My rules for this are a little different based on the time of day and a few other factors.

The Action of New York City
I just finished working on this photo. It was a difficult one, but it was a lot of fun. Shots in Manhattan are often filled with all kinds of complex activity, and Times Square amps that all up to the next order of magnitude.

The weather was perfect this day, and I know that isn't always the case. Since everything was more or less idyllic, I decided to make the most of it and see how many compositions I could squeeze into the afternoon. The only time I spent waiting around was watching for a few Yellow Cabs to streak by.

The Ancient Town of Lijiang
This was a very long exposure -- about five minutes or so. I did this so I could help make most of the people disappear from the scene. It also had a nice side-effect down in the river. People would light candles and float them downstream, and the path they followed came out as little golden streaks.
