San Francisco on an Early Morning I'm excited to share this one!I think this is my favorite image of San Francisco I've ever taken. It wasn't terribly difficult. The hike was pretty short, even though there was one dangerous part. Boy and Grandfather at Tiananmen Square I was walking through Tiananmen on a white-out cloud day taking photos of people. I had on my earphones and was kind of drifting in and among the crowd. It's a bit like being in a movie when you do this... anyway, I'm sure you've heard me mention it before, so I won't go into details. It's often a very nice way to make things timeless... to separate people and objects from their place and time. These two were on the ground wrestling and having fun. Hidden Temple in Bamboo at Night This place was pretty far off the usual beaten path but I was glad to find it!In Kyoto, there is a wonderful and unexpected temple that weaves through an old bamboo forest. It weaves up, down, and around hills with warm, calming bamboo swaying about. Here and there, little temples, urns, and benches are placed. Everything is delicately lit to add to the mood. A Child in Tiananmen Square After I left the exciting-sounding (but actually cool) Beijing City Planning museum, I walked under the street to get to Tiananmen Square. There were thousands of people out celebrating a national holiday. Kids, parents, families, and all sorts of festive activity. Asian kids are always cute aren't they? You just can't get away from it...I found this little one with a busy mom snapping away nearby. Everyone was taking photos everywhere.... it was kind of crazy. 1,000 Red Gates What a wonderful and unique place on earth this is! In Kyoto, Japan, there resides the unique shrine of Fushimi Inari. It consists of thousands of red gates that wind up and down the mountain. I walked through it deep into the night…. I was the only one around and it was downright eerie. Every now and then, the gates would stop and there would be a mini-shrine off to one side or a graveyard to another. Both of these added to the creep factor.I had a serious worry about an hour into the hike through these gates — what if they turn off the lights? I had no flashlight! I considered my two options — I could strobe my SB-800 to find my way out, which would be a totally surreal experience through these gates. The Tori Gate What a perfect post-storm dusk! I was going photo-crazy.This is a replica of the exact same place I have been near Nikko, Japan. The Nikko one is quite hard to shoot! There are many things in the way, and setting up for the ideal shot is no easy matter. Plus, when I was in Japan, the sky was not so great that evening. It's the luck of the cards sometimes!But this evening in Disney World was ultra-perfect. Epcot is the park that has all the little international areas. Japan, Germany, France, etc etc. It's all a little silly and fake -- but it's also very cool and scenic! I don't know how it can be both... but it is. Those Disney imagineers do an incredible job of making things look dreamy. The Boiling Heavens The weather was wet and heavy. It had that feeling that it will rain any minute, and every minute it did not rain felt like a lucky break. This church sat up high on a hill in NW Iceland and could not be seen from the street. I happened to turn up a little driveway and found it at the top. The Golden Gate Bridge at Dusk I had spent the previous night up in Napa, visiting my mom and grandmother. This was a long day with a stop in Petaluma to see Leo's operation, a fast hike through the Muir Woods, and then a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge to catch its majesty at sunset.I'm sure locals know this spot very well, but I found it thanks to Google Earth. I knew it would be a cool spot, but driving to these spots is always a bit sketchy when you have never been there before. It appeared to be a simple jog off Highway 1, and it actually was. It's nice when something that looks easy ends up actually being easy! This isn't usually the case. Even better, the wind wasn't howling a mile a minute, which I think can happen around here if you don't watch out!After I took this, I could hardly wait to get back home to process the final image. I don't know about y'all, but I find the post-processing just as fun as the actual shooting... The Church in the Wilderness before an Icelandic Summer Storm I drove from one end of Iceland to the other by myself, going down almost any road except the main one. I traveled down a little gravel road for a long way until I found this tiny church and graveyard.
