Magical Fog in San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge
I recently drove across the bridge and up this little mountain road to try to find this shot. I started driving up a road I knew well, but it was closed. Closed! So I parked, got out my tripod, and hiked about a mile up this hill to get to this spot. It was a very cool night, but there was some strange inversion happening. Almost anywhere I stood on the side of the hill was a stead hotel-room 72-degrees. And there was zero wind. It was a perfect night, and just when I arrived, the fog really started pouring over the bridge, so I set up for this shot...- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
San Francisco on an Early Morning
I'm excited to share this one!I think this is my favorite image of San Francisco I've ever taken. It wasn't terribly difficult. The hike was pretty short, even though there was one dangerous part. The only other hard part, I suppose, was planning the day/night before so I could stay in Sausalito and wake up early for a quick jaunt over to this area.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of the post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Hidden Temple in Bamboo at Night This place was pretty far off the usual beaten path but I was glad to find it!In Kyoto, there is a wonderful and unexpected temple that weaves through an old bamboo forest. It weaves up, down, and around hills with warm, calming bamboo swaying about. Here and there, little temples, urns, and benches are placed. Everything is delicately lit to add to the mood. And just beyond where the lights are, the bamboo forest is pitch black and full of wonderful mystery.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
1,000 Red Gates What a wonderful and unique place on earth this is! In Kyoto, Japan, there resides the unique shrine of Fushimi Inari. It consists of thousands of red gates that wind up and down the mountain. I walked through it deep into the night…. I was the only one around and it was downright eerie. Every now and then, the gates would stop and there would be a mini-shrine off to one side or a graveyard to another. Both of these added to the creep factor.I had a serious worry about an hour into the hike through these gates — what if they turn off the lights? I had no flashlight! I considered my two options — I could strobe my SB-800 to find my way out, which would be a totally surreal experience through these gates. Or, I could do what one of my Israeli hiker friends did in Argentina, use the back of my camera display for light (he actually used his to set up his tent)!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Tori Gate What a perfect post-storm dusk! I was going photo-crazy.This is a replica of the exact same place I have been near Nikko, Japan. The Nikko one is quite hard to shoot! There are many things in the way, and setting up for the ideal shot is no easy matter. Plus, when I was in Japan, the sky was not so great that evening. It's the luck of the cards sometimes! But this evening in Disney World was ultra-perfect. Epcot is the park that has all the little international areas. Japan, Germany, France, etc etc. It's all a little silly and fake -- but it's also very cool and scenic! I don't know how it can be both... but it is. Those Disney imagineers do an incredible job of making things look dreamy. I do the best I can to capture the magic as I saw it.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Golden Gate Bridge at Dusk I had spent the previous night up in Napa, visiting my mom and grandmother. This was a long day with a stop in Petaluma to see Leo's operation, a fast hike through the Muir Woods, and then a visit to the Golden Gate Bridge to catch its majesty at sunset.I'm sure locals know this spot very well, but I found it thanks to Google Earth. I knew it would be a cool spot, but driving to these spots is always a bit sketchy when you have never been there before. It appeared to be a simple jog off Highway 1, and it actually was. It's nice when something that looks easy ends up actually being easy! This isn't usually the case. Even better, the wind wasn't howling a mile a minute, which I think can happen around here if you don't watch out! After I took this, I could hardly wait to get back home to process the final image. I don't know about y'all, but I find the post-processing just as fun as the actual shooting... I really get a kick out of it!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Church in the Wilderness before an Icelandic Summer Storm I drove from one end of Iceland to the other by myself, going down almost any road except the main one. I traveled down a little gravel road for a long way until I found this tiny church and graveyard. I jumped out to shoot this before the afternoon showers came down.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Miracle in Iceland I knew if I took enough HDR pictures of churches that I would eventually get a miracle. You know, the odds are technically and scientifically in my favor. The sound the miracle made was about the same sound as when they hit that emergency switch in the hatch on Lost. This one was a five-exposure HDR. The cloud streaks were subtle, but nice, and the tone mapping certainly helped them to pop. This was taken from inside the cemetery, whose egress was made through this nice little white gate.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Stuck in Customs in Space I love this shot! It came out wicked. I used to say wicked a lot in grade school and I still like saying it. This may or may not make me lame, and I can't be objective about such things. This is the airport in Bangkok, Thailand. I am not sure who the architect is, but it came out quite inspired. Taking photos of beautiful architecture is somewhat of a sport of mine. I want to try to honor the lines and the textures via a good composition and a good HDR treatment.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
