Palm Trees at Night One night in Oahu we were doing some photography along a beach. Off in the distance we saw some palm trees that were lit from the bottom. It was about a quarter mile from anything else, so that was sort of strange. But I thought it was so interesting to see them lit from the bottom with small green pools of light underneath that I decided to walk over there and see what was going on. After I got over there, there were endless compositions of these various trees. Bridge Through Steamy Jungle Here's another photo from that Disney resort in Oahu. I guess there's nothing about that make it Disney other than it's kinda cool and "feels" right. It makes me wish all bridges had little lights like this!Just in the distance there maybe you can make out a bit of light blue water. That is part of a little lazy river that snakes around the property. Paddleboard in Hawaii The weather in Hawaii was rather dour and dismal for most of my trip. I only caught one sunset while there, so I decided to try to make the most of it.This lone paddleboarder was skating across the surface of the ocean while I was walking along the beach. Although this photo looks fairly serene and calm, I was not. A Smooth Landing This was a wild last-second shot! I was driving down the highway along the coast of Oahu with Tom and we saw this area where these parachuters were practicing landing. Not being a hardcore parachuter (having only done it once!), I didn’t really understand that a landing was something one could “practice” — I figured you just either landed or you died. It seemed pretty binary. Waikiki after Sunset Right after the PhotoWalk in Oahu started, I went over to take this photo. As usual, I talked through it while people were crowded around. But, at first, people didn't ask many questions. That's okay... maybe the situation was weird... but later in the walk, people opened up and started to ask more questions. I think people there were just very nice and didn't want to seem too pushy or anything. Waikiki at NightAnd during the photowalk, there were many great chances to take photos of the city. It was exciting for me — it was my first time to see the city at night. All the Oahu people were kind of used to it, I assume… But it was also exciting to have them all around.When I set up for these shots during the photowalks, it’s always extra-strange. Because I’m really trying to get a good shot, but I also know that a ton of people are watching me right there. And then I talk through my shot while I’m taking it. The Impending Storm And about three minutes later, I was drenched.I barely got this photo in time. I could see the storm coming across the beach towards us. About 60 seconds after I took this photo, you couldn't even see the islands. The worst part wasn't getting soaked -- it was having to run back to the car in the torrential downfall with all my equipment. Chinaman’s Hat Also known as Mokolii, this distinctive island seems to stay in your view for a few hours as you go along the coast of Oahu.EXIF-hunters will notice that I used my D3S to take this photo instead of my D3X. I had to give that D3X a rest after getting it too wet over the previous four days of rainfall. In fact, this was the first opening of the skies after an endless torrent of water and storm. When I set up for these shots during the photowalks, it’s always extra-strange. Because I’m really trying to get a good shot, but I also know that a ton of people are watching me right there. And then I talk through my shot while I’m taking it. And, of course, I NEED to get a good shot… there are so many vectors of attention that it can be a little distracting… but I do my best!
