Orange Queenstown Sunset I had a late night of decadent chocolate at a great local haunt there in Queenstown. I ended up staying later than I expected because of said decadence. This meant I arrived back over to my rental house in Kelvin Heights as the sun was finishing its descent. I ran down to the beach just in time to see this light. Evening Light on the Remarkables Misty and cloudy on the mountains... from this far away, it looks like a mist is blowing across the tops of the mountains. It makes it all appear more dramatic than perhaps it really is while you are there. But I guess there is this idea of relative drama. If you are actually there on the mountain, it's probably quite mild and pretty. The Midnight Wonder Garden Whenever I am in a place like this, I try to linger as late as possible so I am the last one remaining. There are occasionally other people around, but I really prefer to be by myself. I enjoy listening to music, relaxing, and walking around to find the interesting angles.These are the lower gardens of Kiyomizu-dera in one of the older parts of Kyoto. I've been to this area multiple times, and I try to go at different times of the day and different seasons. I'd love to be lucky once and catch it in the snow... The Rainbow After the Storm All that's missing from this one is a unicorn. This is one reason I am excited about genetic engineering. I think that some odd-ball researcher is going to make a real unicorn one day... and everyone (well, MOST everyone) will love it. The Wormhole Shanghai has this incredible tunnel that goes under the river to the Bund. It's just wild inside! They have a series of robotic trains that shuttle people back and forth. Robotic doors whir open then shut again. The front of the capsule has a bubble-window that allows for a stunning view as you dip below the river and back up again. Colored lights in every lighting configuration fly by in beautiful colors. Santa Monica Boulevard You know those images we all have of Los Angeles, California? Pretty roads, lined with palm trees, people on roller skates, and convertibles driving by without a care in the world? Well that is only about 1% of Los Angeles. The rest, sadly is not terribly exciting. But, why not go ahead and take photos of the top 1%? Yes, that's what we do as photographers. Morning. Coffee. Yellowstone. Fog. My poor family. I dragged them all out of bed at 5 AM and put them in the car so I could go take this photo. I did load up on plenty of coffee to keep things fresh and warm on this cool morning, but my kids zonked out in the back of the car anyway. Well, if they're not asleep, they're whining, "Dad??? You stopping again!" ... I rush out the door and trail off, muttering into the wind, "Yes but art must be made, you see..."This spot is not too far from the entrance to West Yellowstone. The warm water that comes from the earth mixes with the cool morning sky. It creates a surreal layer of fog that simply rests on top of the river. It flows up, around, and through the neighboring trees. It reminds me of the dry ice that comes out of cauldrons on Halloween.To take this shot, I set up with a tripod and grabbed 7 exposures from +3 to -3. I always anchor at even zero for these "sun shots." One Plane Alone at the End of the Night Here we are at Santa Monica Airport deep in the night. It was quiet. And peaceful. I spend a massive amount of time at airports. I'm usually totally alone, and, most of the time, this is perfectly all right. I've developed an ever-changing internal dialog that keeps me mentally stimulated at all times. I'm glad no one can read my thoughts... surely they would find the cacophonous chorus to be the height of lunacy.
