Lighthouse on Roanoke Island at Sunset Ahhhh - finally a good sunset! I keep track of the sunsets like an insane meteorologist combined with a native-American shaman. I do my best to look at each day and figure out how things will end up that evening. Predicting more than a day ahead is almost impossible, unless you are at a special place on the planet around a certain type of year.On this day in North Carolina, I knew that the late afternoon storm was a small cell, and it would pass quickly, perhaps letting the sun peak beneath the clouds to light them from the bottom. Lighthouse in Iceland The northwest fjords in Iceland have quickly become one of my favorite areas of the country. People ask me all the time, "I'm going to XXXX country, where should I go?" That is one of the reasons I created the new Stuck On Earth -- for just that purpose. Now, when you zoom into Iceland, you'll see a big collection of images up in this area. Alcatraz in the Dusk Today's photo was taken recently in San Francisco. That tower you see there in the mid-distance is Coit Tower. Just beyond that, in the middle of the bay, you can see Alcatraz. I've never made it out to Alcatraz to take photos, but it is on my list. I wonder how much freedom (!) I would have out there to roam around with my tripod. The Lighthouse Here is another photo taken during my Thanksgiving holiday trip to visit family on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.Even though I spent most of the time with family doing family-stuff, I did head out on occasion to take a few photos. Roanoke Island Lighthouse I’m visiting family for Thanksgiving here on Roanoke Island, and I went out last night after a storm to take some photos. This area is known for beautiful lighthouses, so I put myself on a little mission.I didn’t initially plan on going out to take photos. It started with a jog on the beach a bit before sunset. I was jogging north, listening to good music, and the sun was on me. But, ahead of me, the clouds were dark and scary, like the ones circling Mordor. One of those surreal scenes unfolded in front of me… maybe you know the kind. The sun lit everything perfectly below the horizon, and above the horizon was heavy and foreboding. It was then that I decided that it would be an interesting night for photos!So I jogged back to the house, got my rig, and headed out. All this while, I was still in shorts and a t-shirt, which were now wet with rain since the clouds had come to cover me up on the way home. I drove to this nearby lighthouse, but there was no good way to get this angle. The trees in front were about eight feet high, and there was no break in them… the only thing I could do is pull my car over (a rented minivan), and climb up on top with my tripod. There are not many things more slippery than the top of a wet minivan! The Lighthouse This is one desolate place. I was on the coast of Iceland where the sea and the wind were absolutely ripping their way past the lighthouse. I always imagine what it is like to be inside of one of those lighthouses, all night long through the winter.
