The Pier in Santa MonicaAfter we finished shooting down on the beach, we moved the photowalking party up to the pier. There was just an edge of light left when I took this photo.The dock is in two parts. The first part has the amusement park and the second part extends further out into the sea. Sometimes docks aren’t so great for night shots because they are shaky and move with the waves. But this one was pretty solid — I suppose because of the rides and whatnot that also need to be stable. Deep inside the Haunted Engine Room Right after the LA PhotoWalk, I decided to do something that may or may not have been illegal. There is a haunted ship docked off the coast of Long Beach that has been partially converted to a hotel – the Queen Mary. There is a little tour that takes you around haunted bits here and there. The Russian Sub There is a longer story around this photo that I caught on video... I'll wait for that to be released!But, as you can see, I clearly got onto a Russian sub in the middle of the night. It was docked right next to the Queen Mary in Long Beach. As I was walking across its iron surface and hearing the empty echoes below, I could not imagine the sub making it all the way from Russia to this harbor. Los Angeles from Runyon Canyon I spent most of the day at Tom’s house in the Hollywood hills doing interviews. Getting interviewed all day is kind of a draining thing, in a way. The day was dreadfully cloudy, but around 5 PM, I started to think the sky would be interesting at sunset and into the night. The Power Lunch Here is a wonderful photo mystery. Can anyone name this spot? Where could it be? I hope this is the hardest photo mystery yet. Whenever I put up one of these, the clever people in the community get it almost right away. One Plane Alone at the End of the Night Here we are at Santa Monica Airport deep in the night. It was quiet. And peaceful. I spend a massive amount of time at airports. I'm usually totally alone, and, most of the time, this is perfectly all right. I've developed an ever-changing internal dialog that keeps me mentally stimulated at all times. I'm glad no one can read my thoughts... surely they would find the cacophonous chorus to be the height of lunacy. The Glassy Lake Near Antarctica I’m in the middle of working on a full upgrade for the Stuck In Customs Textures Tutorial. I think it’s already very good (only had ONE return in over a year!), but I can do even better. I’ve learned a lot in the past 18 months about this stuff and the technique continues to evolve. As I am working through some new shots for the tutorial, I thought I would go ahead and post this one. The Massive Glacier at Dusk This is the Perito Moreno Glacier that empties into Lago Argentina. It was simply awesome to be there, as you can plainly see.I was there with a bunch of Russians who had brought an insane amount of cognac. Between shots, they would all drink cognac, yell, and try to bring down the next ice wall. About 13km into the Andes Trek Our hike is starting to get closer to our quarry. The destination inside the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares are the isolated peaks of FItz Roy.Every few kilometers the terrain can change drastically. Because all the land around here is recently glaciated, the soil is very fresh and full of life. The strange mountain formations make for unpredictable weather patterns and cloud/fog formations across the landscapes. Even better, we are here in the middle of autumn, so many of the leaves are turning.It's always a welcome relief to take off my pack, set it down, and then wander about for some photos. I grabbed this one along the way to share with you all.I noticed that the Wikipedia entry for Monte Fitz Roy said, "the weather in the area is exceptionally inclement and treacherous". No shit. Wait until you see the shot I upload tomorrow.
