Cutting the Wheat This shot is from the northern part of Montana, up where the fields go on forever. These nice crop rows are the ones that get caught in your eyes when you are driving by at super-sonic speeds...but you can still make out single rows like frames in an old movie.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
A Little Place I Found on the Way to Dinner in Germany I wish I could walk to dinner every night and find little places like this along the way. Since I carry my tripod and camera just about everywhere, I'd always be ready in case something like this pops up!This was shot in Halle, Germany, just a short train ride from Leipzig. I love how these old churches are often lit with orange lights... I think it always makes them look nice against the blue dusky skies.Setting up the tripod for these evening HDRs always allows you to set the ISO as low as possible, and in aperture priority mode, the shutter will stay open for a long time, letting those clouds drift by and drag light across the lens. It gives a nice feel to the shot and makes the church look even more timeless and solid.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Adventuring in the Valley Argentina is gorgeous. Have I said that before? Doesn't it go without saying by now?You really get to know a set of mountains when you have to hike around them. Fortunately, in the middle of these death marches, I was able to stop and drink in some of the scenery. It took a lot longer than necessary to get to the destination, but at least I arrived with a camera full of photos. That beautiful peak in the distance is Fitz Roy. I was very lucky to see it, because 90% of the time it's covered with clouds.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Caged Buddhas Look Outward Towards the Sunrise If you want to see how I made this (and how you can too!), visit my HDR Tutorial. I hope it gives you some new tricks! Each of these "bells" is really a stone cage that houses a Buddha statue that is seated, facing outwards. At this time in the morning, you can take little flashlights and peer inside the cages. It's all very eerie and fun...In the distance, you can see a few volcanoes poking through the mist.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Her Evening Elegance A Texas sunset settled on the farm as we patiently waited for the sky to repaint itself every few minutes. It was a very relaxing hour, watching the sun slowly descend through the clouds, interrupted on occasion by a stressful swapping of lenses. I hate to get dust in the chamber, so the changing of lenses is always a high-anxiety event! But the anxiety faded away pretty quick as we started watching the sunset again. My friend Leslie had invited me out to her parent's farm near Brady. She's an actress, a model, a photographer, and a bunch of other creative things... so I had told her I would spend equal amounts of time shooting the farm, her animals, and her. It's the old 33/33/33 rule of farm-shooting. Anyway, I am sure some of you would rather see photos of her... and still others of her animals... but I can't make everyone happy at once, so you'll just have to wait a few weeks for me to sprinkle those in! Until then, I hope you enjoy the sunset.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The River's Cool Morning Spray on my Lens Another morning waking up at 5:00 AM. I'll admit... even though I sleep very little, getting up before 6 is always a little rough. But it's what you gotta do if you want to see the sun rise in the north during the summer. Of course, the freezing rivers that rip through the canyons of Glacier National Park offer a thousand opportunities for good lighting at daybreak. I think I got a little too close to the river here and some of the morning wind kicked up some spray from the rapids onto the lens. In retrospect, I should not have been standing anywhere near that thing!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
About 13km into the Andes Trek Our hike is starting to get closer to our quarry. The destination inside the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares are the isolated peaks of FItz Roy.Every few kilometers the terrain can change drastically. Because all the land around here is recently glaciated, the soil is very fresh and full of life. The strange mountain formations make for unpredictable weather patterns and cloud/fog formations across the landscapes. Even better, we are here in the middle of autumn, so many of the leaves are turning. It's always a welcome relief to take off my pack, set it down, and then wander about for some photos. I grabbed this one along the way to share with you all.I noticed that the Wikipedia entry for Monte Fitz Roy said, "the weather in the area is exceptionally inclement and treacherous". No shit. Wait until you see the shot I upload tomorrow. It was taken after 16km of walking in a single day after waking up to -7 degrees at 4:30 AM from a tent that contained the heavily scented noxious scents of the one and only Yuri.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
