The River That Ran Through Lyon at Midnight I walked around Lyon at midnight with a Russian friend. We were so busy at the conference most of the time that the first chance we had to shoot together was when the streets were almost empty and the river was black. He saw me walking with my camera attached to my tripod and the strap hanging down. He winced, saying he saw one of his friend’s cameras just drop off the head and crash to the ground. He forced me to wrap the strap around the tripod just in case… and I still do that to this day, thinking about is disapproving Russian scowl. I don’t need to see that it my mind’s eye…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Crossing the Bridge into Old Lyon This was a pretty tough shot to get! This was a little pedestrian bridge that crossed from the new part of Lyon, France, into the older part. It swayed and buckled in the breeze. Plus, it was night, so you kind of have to leave the shutter open for a long time. I hate to crank up the ISO, but I had to so everything would stay sharp. That night I walked around for about five hours deep past midnight. It was just me and my Russian friend… walking around… solving the world’s problems… while he gave me all kinds of hard-ass Russian advice on how to solve my own!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Navigating Across the Rivers of New Zealand in the Morning Mists I woke up in the morning before everyone else to go on an extended scouting mission. I arrived around this river just as the morning mists were lifting enough to give me a view into the distance.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Golden Valleys I’ve taken to going out on random drives around New Zealand. I put on music and just follow the sun around. It ducks behind and beyond mountains and valleys, so I turn this way and that, and often get out to hike around inaccessible areas. It’s the middle of the winter here, so the sun is always quite low, so we get nice, extended sunrises and sunsets. Every now and then, the sun gets into a certain angle and everything is bathed in gold…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Solar Storm Hits Queenstown I’ve been awake for two days.It all started yesterday after I put the kids to bed. I got a Facebook message from Stefan Haworth. It turns out that he and Eden Brackstone were headed out for a little viewing of the big solar storm that was hitting the atmosphere. Down thisaway, it’s called the Aurora Australis. Since I’ve never before seen one (despite countless attempts in Iceland), I was ready to suit up!And it turns out that one of the best places we saw them was right here in Queenstown! I had a decent view from the place I am staying here at The Commonage, but the clouds were pretty heavy. So, we drove down along Lake Wakatipu until we were just past Wye creek. I got out of the car, let my eyes adjust, then saw colored shafts of light shooting up through the edge of our snow-globe. It wasn’t like I expected! It’s…. hard to explain.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Wild Japanese River Here is another photo from Japan (two days in a row) – this time from a more crazy scene!I hired a boat to take me down a rough river near Nikko. There were many sights to be seen that I could get to from the river, so I decided to take all my equipment on this ride. That was a bad idea! It wasn’t my first (or last) bad idea.Things got a little crazy in the boat sometimes, and the guys that were “steering” us down the rapids often looked pretty nervous and panicked. When they got panicked, I got 2x panicked!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Lonely River in Iceland I wonder sometimes if I project my own emotions onto the landscape around me. I’m really not all that dramatic, but sometimes this does seem to be the case, especially in Iceland. Since I spend so much time there alone, I end up thinking that parts of the environs seem kind of lonely too. And I think there is probably a lot of truth in it because I hardly ever see any other humans, so everything is very lonely!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
