Under the Factory As I explored the abandoned airplane factories in this old section of Beijing, I went down into the basement level to see what I could find. There were all sorts of iron fixtures, strange knobs and wheels, semi-circular openings to kilns that had been bricked closed, and endless layers of peeling, scorched paint.I wanted to go back to this whole area to explore more, but maybe next time. The Fed Ex Forum Awaiting the New Season I was lucky enough to get a tour of the Memphis Grizzlies home stadium when there was hardly anyone around. The Fed-Ex Forum is an amazing facility. I think it looks like a great place to go watch games. The surrounding downtown area is also very cool... seems like it would be a great way to spend a night out. I've never been in Memphis on game night, but I'll be sure to make that happen some time!Also I got to go back in the locker room and meet some of the players. The guys were so nice and affable... I couldn't get over it. I don't know what I expected, but they were just all really young nice dudes. And then I saw this little underwater rehab/training facility. It was really wide and had this conveyor belt that ran under water. I asked why it was so wide and was told it was originally used for horse rehab! Running to the Storm Cellar on the Farm The visions of a farm bracing against a storm had come true that afternoon. I'm sure the last thing I was supposed to be doing was taking a photo of the swirling maelstrom, but I couldn't help it. What else are you going to do with a good tripod and a nice Nikon? The Church in the Wilderness before an Icelandic Summer Storm I drove from one end of Iceland to the other by myself, going down almost any road except the main one. I traveled down a little gravel road for a long way until I found this tiny church and graveyard. Dante's Gates of Hell This is Rodin's huge famous La Porte de l"Enfer, also known as the Gates of Hell. I found it off to the side of the Musee Rodin in Paris while I was in a tempestuous mood. The sculpture depicts a scene from Dante's "The Inferno". It contains over 180 of his finest sculptures. Swallowing the Ruins - Trey Ratcliff I made it to the heart of Ta Prohm, an undisturbed Bayon ruin out the outskirts of Angkor Wat. It was late in the day and there was a break in the afternoon summer showers.To me, the best thing about these temples and ruins is that you can go anywhere, high or low, safe or not. There are hundreds of tiny nooks, old broken stone doors, lost hallways, and mysterious carvings peeking out of the overgrowth. There are no tort-related legal signs barring you from going anywhere... explorer beware. Besides, if you got injured, the jungle and insects would eat you alive before the night was over.As soon as I walked into Ta Prohm, the thunder started rumbling around and dappled clouds rolled in. The rain started and stopped several times, so I would take refuge in crumbling crypts and hallways until the rain let up. I took some wrong turns, but I eventually ended up here with a break in the storm.
