The Artist Takes a Break In Buenos Aires, there is a very artsy area called La Boca. It's filled with tiny little studios, restaurants, tango in the streets, and all kinds of life. The colors are bright and vibrant, so, of course, I went crazy with my camera there. While exploring, I found this cool artist's studio on the second floor of an interior section. I had on my 24-70mm, and I was admiring her studio at f2.4. Then, by luck, she came to the window to peer out. I grabbed a quick one.This was edited with Nik Software, so I took this opportunity to write a Nik Review for y'all! It's very cool software, and I have put a bunch of new images inside of there... The Fed Ex Forum Awaiting the New Season I was lucky enough to get a tour of the Memphis Grizzlies home stadium when there was hardly anyone around. The Fed-Ex Forum is an amazing facility. I think it looks like a great place to go watch games. The surrounding downtown area is also very cool... seems like it would be a great way to spend a night out. I've never been in Memphis on game night, but I'll be sure to make that happen some time!Also I got to go back in the locker room and meet some of the players. The guys were so nice and affable... I couldn't get over it. I don't know what I expected, but they were just all really young nice dudes. And then I saw this little underwater rehab/training facility. It was really wide and had this conveyor belt that ran under water. I asked why it was so wide and was told it was originally used for horse rehab! The Violent Volcano I thought this mountain and cloud formation was too perfect to ignore. Clouds always do strange things when they pass over mountains, but this one seemed particularly violent and unexpected.This is not actually a volcano. it's just a regular old mountain in the Andes that had a nice little volcanic shape. I skirted around it for a while (skirting is quite a trek at this radius), until the angle seemed about right... although I had to skirt fast before the clouds changed. I have always wanted to take a photo of a volcano that is erupting. I climbed up part of a volcano that was erupting in Costa Rica, and you could see the red rocks, but I got absolutely zero good shots. Guarding the Beaches of LA Being a lifeguard in LA must be a great job. Or it might be a boring job. Or it might have occasions of greatness filled with a long periods of boredom. There was a lifeguard sitting here in the station on Manhattan Beach when I took the shot. I guess I could have asked her while I stood outside her station for 10 minutes with all my glass aimed right at her. I kept giving her a nod of confidence, indicating that everything was okay. The Old Bones I Found on the Way to Mordor As for this photo from Argentina, this was found on the second day of hiking into the Andes. The landscape changes very quickly and we emerged from one forest and were suddenly facing another. The stark white roots reminded me of bones coming out of the ground and holding up old trees. In the distance, you can see the final destination of this hike - the mysterious peaks of Fitz Roy. These are covered by clouds 90% of the time, so to have them on a crystal clear day was lucky indeed. Tomorrow, in addition to posting the short film, I'll show you a closer shot of Fitz Roy that was taken around 6 AM the next morning, after an icy hike of 1500 feet in pitch black. Inside My Secret Cloning Chamber I would love to have a mad scientist lab that is only accessible via a retinal scan and a special dance. Inside I would have all kinds of fabulous things, including a clone chamber where I would clone myself several times so that I could keep track of all my various social networks. The clone would, of course, have the same retina, but it could not gain access into the mad science lab because it would fail the special dance bit.I'd very much like to record a music video in here alongside Flight of the Conchords.As you can see from my intricate tagging system, this was shot in Chicago. About to Cross the Stream on the Hike, Approaching the Blue Glacier This is about 20km into our backpacking. The fertile soil from recent glaciation sprang colorful life everywhere, even as the valley was changing colors for autumn. Little streams trickled here and there and fell into larger streams. Fording some of these was always a little sketchy when carrying a bunch of expensive camera equipment, but it was always worth it.I can't explain how often I stopped to take photos along this hike! The Parisian Boulevard Where I Should Not Have Been Standing While I was working on this, I was thinking how nice it would be to have someone near me who could speak French... I always love the sound of it, and the words can make matters seem ephemerally okay.Paris is one of those places where the streets are always a little wet, at least in my head. Exploring the Valleys Beyond the Fjords of Akureyri I had always wanted to visit fjords ever since reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as a kid... picturing Slartibartfast carving them up was something that always stuck in my mind. The first ones I got to visit were in Iceland after I went up north to stay in Akureyri for a few days. I had actually intended to go one place that my friend Helga suggested, but I ended up getting lost, which is okay enough. This fjord valley kept going and going as the sun started to rise over the edges.
