Across the Floors of Union Station This room is closed to photography for some reason! Actually, it’s totally closed to all human traffic. I’m not sure if this was a one-time thing, but I got the feeling it was because the ropes and whatnot that told me not to go in here seemed like they had been there for a while. You know the feeling. Perhaps they only open it for the rare events…But I went through the silly ropes and took a photo anyway. The security guard came to get me, but he was pretty nice about it. I just told him that the ropes confused me and I figured they must surely be a mistake.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Old Train Station in Los Angeles Here’s another place I found thanks to sweet Stuck On Earth. I think LA has a bunch of these places that are kinda secret – sort of hidden away and no one would ever find them. For example, I can’t think of a reason I would ever go into the train station in Los Angeles. Maybe if trains were a bit better in the US, then I would have occasioned them… anyway, I’m glad I found out about this place.Tom and I went in here and had a fun time shooting. We were approached by security because of our tripods. We thought we were in heap-big-trouble, but it turns out they brought a form to sign right there on the spot. How convenient!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Stars Above Grand Central Station I took this photo a few moments before getting kicked out for using a tripod. They said I could go sign up for a permit, but I told them I could not be bothered. I wasn’t mean about it, just sort of matter-of-fact. I asked if women with strollers needed to get a permit or men with canes, and they said of course not.I would like to make a tripod that attached to a baby stroller. In fact, instead of the baby, I could put all my camera gear down there. So it could be a rolling camera-bag-stroller with tripod attachment. It would look crazy, but it would be kind of awesome too.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Hare in Harajuku
Every time I go to Tokyo, I try to spend some time in Harajuku. It's one of the wildest and most unique places in an already unique city. It's the sort of place where you take a people-shooting lens because of all the various types of people you see walking through the streets. And even more unique than the people are some of the shots and the decor, as you can see here...

Approaching Grand Central Station in the Rain Rainy nights in cities pose a tough problem. Really, in many ways, you have to fight against every natural human instinct to go out into the rain on purpose. It's so easy just to want to stay inside, make a hot cocoa (or, a think Aztec Drinking Chocolate in my case), watch a movie, be all cozy, etc etc. But the little photographer inside of you also knows how interesting things are out there! So, I tend to compromise, and force myself to go outside half the time and stay inside half the time. This occasion in New York City was obviously one of the times I went out in the rain. You can see I am approaching Grand Central Station -- and that is the famous Chrysler Building in the background. This was shot with the Nikon 14-24 Lens (See my Nikon 14-24 Review). It's an expensive lens, so if you are looking for something cheaper that also takes great wide-angle shots, check out the Sigma 10-20mm (Review coming some day when I mysteriously get more time).- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Tokyo from the Air Wow this city is amazing. I have to go back soon!I found one of the tallest buildings and scooted my way around inside until I found an elevator to the top. On the way up, I was lucky to be on a glass elevator. I was as shocked as you when I saw that soccer field on top of a building! How cool! I'd love to get up there and play around with those guys. If you'd like to see the details there, or anywhere else, be sure to see the original sized version. You can find that by following the photo to the Flickr site, clicking on "All Sizes" and then "Original".- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Gestalt of Coming and Going I do love train stations in Europe!I think each one has a personality of its own, and the gestalt is a function of the trains that come to visit. Leipzig wouldn’t be Leipzig if it never made a connection to Dresden. The stations really have no say in the matter and connections just get made on their own. It’s the natural order of things. Whatever it is about Dresden that makes it special becomes part of Leipzig, and vice versa. This is from my LucisArt 6.0 tutorial… I’m still a-workin’ on it when my mind has moments of lucid thought.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Inside the Train Station I think, as Americans, we are over-the-top interested in European train stations. I really enjoy them. I don't know why... they just seem like really interesting places to be. This is part of the train station in Leipzing -- the part after you get off the train and go into the shopping area. Curiously, if you look at the large or original size, you can see taxi cabs driving through the inside of the mall. I do not have a full explanation for this.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Alone in Winter, Against the World... This is one desolate place. It's the southern coast of Iceland where the sea and the wind were absolutely ripping their way past me and the lighthouse. I always imagine what it is like to be inside of one of those lighthouses, all night long through the winter. I can't even envision what that would be like, and after only a short time there in the icy wind, I got the willies and was happy to get out of there.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

This room is closed to photography for some reason! Actually, it’s totally closed to all human traffic. I’m not sure if this was a one-time thing, but I got the feeling it was because the ropes and whatnot that told me not to go in here seemed like they had been there for a while. You know the feeling. Perhaps they only open it for the rare events…

But I went through the silly ropes and took a photo anyway. The security guard came to get me, but he was pretty nice about it. I just told him that the ropes confused me and I figured they must surely be a mistake.
