The Airship Isabella III
During SXSW, I ended up at a party that had a pretty big steampunk contingent, which is of course very cool to me. I thought I had some good steampunk stuff from Burning Man until I saw these guys...

This was at the Big Bang Bordello Party put on by True Ventures and Tunehopper. It was super-crowded, like most decent SXSW parties, and there was a raucous stage show with a bunch of gals in lingerie and stuff. Is it lame that I hung out with all the steampunk guys in the back? Yes, probably.

Many of them were crew from the Airship Isabella, and they had all kinds of inventive steam-powered goodies. What is Steampunk? Follow that link for the Wikipedia entry... and also, you may remember the Steampunk photo from Burning Man.

The Forest on the Mega Volcano I would guess about 50% of people know this, and I should not take it for granted that everyone does. But Yellowstone sits on top of a giant caldera, and it's due to go off any time (at least, geologically due!) If you look at a map of Yellowstone from above, you can see the clear outline of the caldera. When the mega-volcano strikes, it'll be a doozy! - Trey Ratcliff The rest of this entry is here. There's also a review of the new Nikon 200-400mm lens and an interview at Trip Atlas! Full day!
Prismatic Steam in Yellowstone
This is the beautiful grand prismatic spring, which you have probably seen featured here before ...

The Wall of Fog The morning in Yellowstone had the most unusual weather! While I was driving in, the Earth-heated river was steaming in the frigid morning air. It looked incredibly awesome, but I knew it was the kind of thing that was really tough to capture in a photo. After a bit more exploration and random turns, the road approached a giant wall of solid fog. I popped out of the car for a shot before getting back in to drive into the wall. Inside, the morning light was strange when it came in at sharp angles through the trees. Since I had to drive so slow, I pulled over to the side and took out my pack for a morning hike into the trees... I have more of those shots to post in the future!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Geothermal Genie Thanks for all my fans and all the nice comments/emails - I know I have a bunch of unique and interesting people that come to the site!So as for this picture... I've never been one of those people that can easily see shapes in clouds. Nor am I one of those people that can pass a Rorschach Test without being immediately thrown in jail for something I might have done. But in this picture, I think I see a genie coming out of that geothermal vent. This was shot in Iceland on a *rather* chilly day.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Icy Explosion This is Strokkur, the biggest geyser in Iceland and the second biggest in the world. It can shoot twice as high as Old Faithful in the states, and it blasted off about every 5-6 mins or so... which seems like a VERY long time while standing around in the wintery mix of the frozen tundra. It was already fairly cold there, but all the moisture in the air made it a "wet cold", which is a whole new level of cold.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
