Package 3 - Steampunk Afternoon
The Wicked Show I was in a hangout the other night with Chee Chew from Google, and, somehow, the topic of musicals came up. It turns out that he's a huge fan of musicals and he saw Wicked here in London also. I would have never taken that guy for a big fan of musicals... and I suppose there are many lurker-musical fans out there... are you one of them? The Airship Isabella III During SXSW, I ended up at a party that had a pretty big steampunk contingent, which is of course very cool to me. I thought I had some good steampunk stuff from Burning Man until I saw these guys... This was at the Big Bang Bordello Party put on by True Ventures and Tunehopper. It was super-crowded, like most decent SXSW parties, and there was a raucous stage show with a bunch of gals in lingerie and stuff. Is it lame that I hung out with all the steampunk guys in the back? Yes, probably. Many of them were crew from the Airship Isabella, and they had all kinds of inventive steam-powered goodies. What is Steampunk? The Teleporters I’m not even sure which hotel in Beijing this is! (edit: comments indicate it is the Grand Millennium Hotel in Beijing) I was randomly walking around an urban area and peered inside some windows to see this. It looked so amazing inside — I had no choice but to go right into the lobby to set up! I was able to squeeze off a few rounds before security stopped me.Security came up to me and asked, in perfect English, “Please, sir, you cannot take pictures!” I responded by saying, “But sir, you don’t understand! I don’t even speak English!”This left him confused for long enough for me to take another bracketed set. On the night of the actual burn of the tower (which you can see in the background), there was a little gathering of steampunk players toward the inner ring. One of the girls saw me taking photos, and came over to compare goggles for a bit. I grabbed this one of her just before it was time to return to her party. I've processed many photos from Burning Man. It was an amazing time, and I took a different approach. I did the usual HDR style on a few, but I also experimented quite a bit. Steampunk at Burning Man



Everyone at Burning Man is in costume all the time. That's about 50,000 people at a week-long costume party that becomes pretty intense. On the night of the actual burn of the tower (which you can see in the background), there was a little gathering of steampunk players toward the inner ring. One of the girls saw me taking photos, and came over to compare goggles for a bit. I grabbed this one of her just before it was time to return to her party.

I've processed many photos from Burning Man. It was an amazing time, and I took a different approach. I did the usual HDR style on a few, but I also experimented quite a bit. I'll share some of this in an upcoming post -- I'm aiming to get them up sometime this week if I can!
