No Pool This Beautiful Should be Empty at a Time Like This I think the title says it all!I've never been much of a swimmer. I mean, I can swim just fine and I'm as bouyant as anyone my age should be, but I don't really like it as a form of exercise. THere is always so much that goes into the perparation bit of the exercise. Also, since I can't liseten to my iPod while I swim, that's kind of a deal-killer. I've heard they have some new water-proof MP3 players, but that just sounds like too much trouble all around.Anyway, this was a 5-exposure HDR that went from -2 to +2. I'm convinced it's the only way to shoot into the sun and get all the light levels of the details around the pool.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
A Lonely Walk to the Ocean It was a lonely beach! So sad. I think I had a lot of things to talk about this day too! I can't remember. Sometimes Twitter and Facebook just don't cut it!In other news, I'll be at a charity function in Dallas next Saturday. They are auctioning off some of my art at my old school, Good Shepherd, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Now, anyone can buy raffle tickets ($15), even if you do have to go through a somewhat annoying registration process. I also understand they have a new library where one of my prints will be hung. I'll try to nab a photo of it while there!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Tunnel Beach This is a really beautiful and unique beach just south of Dunedin. It’s not a drive-up-and-visit-beach. It’s a drive-up-and-walk-a-long-way-then-down-a-long-tunnel-beach. Once we got down there, hardly anyone was at the beach. The views are amazing, and we even saw a few cliff divers. I think those guys are a bit crazy! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Evening in Santa Cruz I really rushed here at the last minute for this photo! I arrived just as the sun was setting to get some shots from above, then came down to the beach to take some more of the reflection off the wet sand. It was so perfect down there, and it lasted for a good thirty minutes after sunset, which was quite convenient! After I was done taking these, a gentleman came over that recognized me from the website. It was good of him to do this – we talked for a little while – I always enjoy meeting new people, so if you see me, don’t be afraid to come say hello!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Moeraki Boulders at Sunrise A group of people from NZIPP went out for an overnight road trip to this amazing place on the east coast. I’ve always wanted to shoot them at sunrise, but it kind of requires you to sleep pretty close by. I live in Queenstown, which is about 3-4 hours away, and that would mean a 2 AM wake-up time in the summer! One of the tricky things about these boulders is ensuring you arrive at low-tide. At high-tide, they are almost totally inaccessible… so timing a sunrise with a low-tide takes a bit of planning. Thanks to Jason Law and NZIPP for the nice invite!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
A Beach for your Thoughts Another night on Virgin Gorda… another perfect beach and sunset…Since it was so perfect every night I was there, I simply could not go without taking a sunset/beach photo. I simply could not deny myself! And then every night I would think to myself, “Well I’m glad I got that because tomorrow night there will be bad light and no clouds.” But I was always wrong. Every single night had a crazy light/cloud situation!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Big Sur Sunset
Last week I promised I would reveal the photo today that I took during the video above, and here it is.

I guess you can get the sense from that video how windy it was! What a crazy day... I spent all afternoon and evening getting ready for this. There was a decent amount of hiking, preparation, and walking-around to figure out the best place to stand.

Maybe the bad thing about that video is showing how easy it all appears to be... in future videos, you may see some more of the problems that I face and how I deal with them. In some ways, I think that is more real than something that appears to fairy-book perfect!

The Last Sunset It was one of those perfect sunsets where time went in slow motion. I was on high-alert, and kept everything flowing as I moved from location to location. It's not easy to dance across rocks with the tripod fully extended, but it certainly is memorable!I saw this dock early in the day, and I was secretly hoping that it might just point towards the sun as it passed the horizon. So I had this shot planned along with about 10 others. Some worked out and some didn't. This is one of the ones that worked out.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Beachcomber Motel When I was in San Clemente, I walked up the road to visit the Beachcomber Motel. Even though I stayed in a friend's place on the beach, I was getting kicked out the last night. So I walked up here to check on accommodations. It looked quite perfect! I set up to take some photos, and management came out to stop me. I had to do some fast-talking to let them know I was not a threat. I have a certain boyish charm at times, but only at times. In this case, it just barely worked. I promised I would send the photos after I got them processed, which I finally have. And here it is.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.

No Pool This Beautiful Should be Empty at a Time Like This

I think the title says it all!

I've never been much of a swimmer. I mean, I can swim just fine and I'm as bouyant as anyone my age should be, but I don't really like it as a form of exercise. THere is always so much that goes into the perparation bit of the exercise. Also, since I can't liseten to my iPod while I swim, that's kind of a deal-killer. I've heard they have some new water-proof MP3 players, but that just sounds like too much trouble all around.

Anyway, this was a 5-exposure HDR that went from -2 to +2. I'm convinced it's the only way to shoot into the sun and get all the light levels of the details around the pool.
