The Starlight in Downtown Los Angeles
Here is a crazy spot I found thanks to sweet sweet Stuck On Earth. I’ve been to downtown LA many times, and there are many good angles, but I think this one is just about one of the best. There was a lot of waiting around, however. I had to wait for big busses to pass me on either side so I could set up for the long exposure.Usually, I’ll take 5 exposures in these situations, but I do something a little special. I’ll take the quicker exposures right away (often 1 or 2 seconds). And then I’ll pause and wait for a bus or something before taking the longer exposures. I create the HDR then mask in the tail lights from the photos where I get the best trails. I made that sound easier than it is, I think.-Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this entry at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Isabella on a Miniature PonyA few evenings ago, we went to go visit The Brackstones, family friends that live nearby in Gibbston. Kerry Brackstone has taken to raising miniature ponies, so this sounded like something my two girls should not miss! We went over there for and the girls had an absolute ball on the ride. After that, we sat down for a fabulous dinner. And no, we did not eat the miniature ponies.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of the entry at the Stuck in Customs blog.

New York City TravelSo this is my newest photo of Times Square. I return to this spot time and time again. The situation, light, cars, people, and billboards are always different, so it’s never a dull subject. It’s also always such a challenge to shoot that it keeps all my senses fully honed. In fact, I’m already thinking about going back to New York City for another photograph of Times Square!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read this entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Exploring TokyoSome architecture just feels “Japanese.” I don’t know what that means, but there are some situations that just feel like they fit better in modern Japan than other countries. You might also remember this from the video I did from Japan. There was this scene where a girl’s high heels were walking across this lighted ground at night in slo-mo. This is that same place from a different perspective during the day.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this entry at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Pretty Door in ArlesIt was a perfect day in Arles while my wife and I were strolling around the streets and finding little things here and there. She went into a cafe to get some food to go, and I took the time to wander the streets and find some pretty little scenes. Many of the window shutters, gates, and doors were painted all sorts of colors. I thought this little place along the street had a nice feel to it… made me wish I lived there!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of the post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Private Gardens in the Forbidden CityOn a recent trip to China, I was invited to a private residence inside the Forbidden City. I had a two-hour tea service that was pleasant and relaxing. After this, I was allowed to wander the private gardens and inner cloisters for a while. I took as many photos as I could, and here is one of them.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post (and see a video of me on TV in China!) at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Man in HutongThese are some of the most off-the-map areas in and around the cities of China. These Houtongs originally meant “water wells” and were established during China’s dynastic period. They still exist today as little cultural centers where old families live and work and sit on the steps and watch the world go by…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Hiking in Carmel
Just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea is a hiking trail that goes along the coast. I went down at sunrise one morning to see what I could find. The entrance to the trail was blocked by a gate, and there was no ranger in the little box-place where rangers stand. I was bamboozled. There was no way through or around. I could have walked, but it looked like the road went on quite a ways before the parking lot.So I waited until some other guy came along to let himself in. I was parked a ways back, and so I got his attention from afar by grunting and raising my Nikon-on-tripod over my head like a sand raider -- he got the message and waved me through.- Trey RatcliffRead the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
