Our Galaxy over QueenstownI took this photo on the evening of the Aurora Australis a few weeks ago. I came up with (BY ACCIDENT!) a new way of orienting the Milky Way so it goes straight up and down. Really, in the sky, it is a little bit tilted to the right. Anyway, here’s the trick.When you take the photo, have your camera tilted to the left a bit. Then, when you crop later in Photoshop, turn on the “Perspective” checkbox and drag over the upper left corner until it is parallel with the Milky Way. Musician at the Chinese Opera It was my second visit to this particular opera and my third visit to a Chinese opera. I was fortunate enough to be able to move freely around the venue, as long as I did not get in the way of the performers. That wasn’t very easy, since the performers would often just start running down and around the aisles! They would dart this way and that, run around columns come in and out of random doors and re-use the same pathways that I was navigating. So I had to be on constant alert!There was one girl that was playing a very unusual Chinese instrument. The Nameless Pagoda SleepsTom and I visited this Pagoda late one evening in Li Jiang. There was zero wind, so the perfect reflection made us happy. The thing that did not make us happy was having to get on the ground with our tripods in the lowest position. Giants Stadium When I spent the evening at the Giants game in San Francisco, we had carte blanche to go anywhere and shoot anything, so that was pretty awesome. Tom and I had the number of the PR guy in our pocket in case anyone gave us any trouble… but no one did. We spent most of the night roaming around the stadium, taking photos from many vantage points. Rainbow over the Lake in Queenstown I had just dropped my kids off for their first day of school. I had my D3S with me because I was taking photos of that momentous event, so it was still with me when I went downtown to sign some papers. When I got downtown, the rain was just starting to slow down, but there was still a thick morning dampness in the air over the lake, and a full rainbow was right in front of me. Swimming Through the Grotto The swimming pool at the Aulani (a Disney hotel) on Oahu is pretty incredible. I only saw the place at night, so I’m not sure how it looks during the day. But it looks like it was designed just so that it would look awesome at night!It’s attached to one of those lazy rivers that bends around this way and that. I do like lazy rivers, but I don’t like all the Disney lifeguards watching me on every bend. What if I want a little lazy-river privacy? The Skeletal Hallway While walking through one of the amazing Gaudi homes in Barcelona, we came upon this unique hallway. I didn’t have a tripod for my full-on treatment, so I did my best to see what I could get with a single RAW. Up High in QueenstownWe have finally moved into the new house here in Queenstown. I was in for less than 24 hours when I decided to get up to the top of this nearby mountain to shoot down on the whole scene. The Sphere of Influence I thought this sphere was so unusual when I saw it the first time.
