The Stars Above Grand Central Station I took this photo a few moments before getting kicked out for using a tripod. They said I could go sign up for a permit, but I told them I could not be bothered. I wasn’t mean about it, just sort of matter-of-fact. I asked if women with strollers needed to get a permit or men with canes, and they said of course not.I would like to make a tripod that attached to a baby stroller. In fact, instead of the baby, I could put all my camera gear down there. So it could be a rolling camera-bag-stroller with tripod attachment. It would look crazy, but it would be kind of awesome too.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Painted Mountains of Death Valley I woke up on the final morning to go find this special area of Death Valley. I tried to get to things as early as possible before the heat came along. The middle of August is about the worst time to be in Death Valley, but it did do an excellent job of getting rid of the crowds for me!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Inception: New York I took these photos in New York City before going to LA to prepare for Burning Man. I found this spot below in midtown during a walk from Bryant Park over to the Facebook HQ in NYC. If you check my Facebook page, you’ll see some photos that Luke shot of me while I was taking this shot. It’s the one when I was awkwardly up under my camera shooting almost straight up in the air! You know that position…- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Mysterious Rock of Wonder The day in Death Valley was about 115 F (46 C). It wasn’t a dry heat either… there has been a lot of humidity here and there is flash lightning in the day and night. This location here took a lot of time, effort, and 4×4 to find. I took five gallons of water, a map, and some warnings from the place that rented the jeep that this area was inaccessible because of recent road wash-outs from rivers. Well, they were right! So getting the 4×4 over and through the washed out rivers took many more hours than expected. I only suffered one minor injury when my head slammed into the rollbar during a clumsy maneuver. But after I finally found this place I’ve always wanted to visit, it was late afternoon with plenty of time to hike around before night fell.I look forward to your theories (from the boring to the surreal) of what makes these rocks move across the playa on their own!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post over at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Girl in Austin on BikeWhen I was at South by Southwest, we had an amazing photowalk downtown. After the whole thing was over, I spent about an hour saying hello to people and having my picture taken and this sort of thing. I do always enjoy that… having extra time to meet people is always nice. After I was done, I went into the Driskill to get a few things I left behind. I went out of the lobby to get into Curtis’ car to whisk me away back home when I saw this girl riding one of those pedicabs. I thought she was kinda cute, so I grabbed this quick shot.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Forever CoastOahu looks like such a small island on the map, but the coast seems to go on for ever and ever! We drove around the island in a counter-clockwise manner and popped out of the car from time to time.To get to this spot in particular, Tom and I had to jump over the guard rail and run out onto a little cliff. It was quite high up, so I didn’t get too close to the edge… but the high perspective helped me to aim down along the coast without needing to show the horizon.- Trey RatcliffRead the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Griffith ObservatoryThis was a very fun night in LA.I went up to the Griffith Observatory with Tom to grab a photo. I had always heard about this spot, but never made it up there to take photos of my own. The conditions are very difficult, and the parking was quite rough. After a long walk and deciding on a shot, I set up for what you see here…Maybe I’ll have to go back here with my Genie! :)- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Yosemite in Late AfternoonI spent about a week in Yosemite, and every day had slightly different light. I was quite sad there was no snow the entire time, but I am excited to go back and see it!Even though there was no snow, I was quite cold. I tried out a new set of gloves which were quite crappy. I think the only kind of situation I like when it is cold is those mittens that flip up so I can use my fingers. I had the perfect mittens, but then I lost one of them, so now I only have one mitten, and this is a sad thing.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the entire post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Where the Princess Dwells at Night…
I called for a little PhotoWalk at Disney! It was really really really fun - and getting this shot was tough! I think +William Beem +Gilmar Smith +Keith Barrett or perhaps +Ali Elhajj got a video of me trying to convince half a dozen Disney workers to "sweep water" in front of my camera, which was splayed on the ground. At first, one guy didn't want to do it because he might get in trouble... then the other acquiesced... and then, before they knew it, they were all being controlled like crystal farmers in Starcraft... we eventually got all the water in the right place!I had to go over and whip out my sweet Android phone to show them some photos from Google+ -- I found the one from Paris with the puddle - I said I needed a puddle about thiiiiis big … and eventually we got it all engineered out. They were all very helpful and nice… I convinced them all to come onto Google+ to see the final result -- so I hope they are here! Hi guys - Y muchas gracias!- Trey RatcliffRead the rest at the Stuck in Customs blog.
