The New Garden Path Along the Great Wall of China Just to get to this point required a long walk through a rocky forest. It wasn’t like the super-pristine part of the Great Wall (which is actually quite fake and Disney-like) — where you can drive up in a huge tour bus and park in huge parking lot. No, it wasn’t like that at all. Instead, there was a “path” that was barely discernable (much less so when I walked back in the dark alone!) that wove up through a forest along an old creekbed. Random Sighting in Beijing I was walking around the arts district in Beijing and saw this cute girl posing up against a wall for her friend. After I was sneaky and took this photo, she looked over and gave me an even bigger smile! hehe… I notice sometimes that girls over there take a lot of photos of each other and act silly. And then, whenever I swoop in and take a picture, they get even sillier. A Moody Evening at the Great Wall One of the good things about the haze around parts of China are the moody sunset hours. Overgrown Tower Atop the Great Wall You may remember seeing towers that connect the sections of the Great Wall. Here I am inside of one of them that has fallen to ruins and the vegetation has taken over. Walking Farther Along the Ancient Great Wall Some of the places I visited on this ancient, original stretch of the Great Wall were almost too covered in vegetation to navigate. Thick conifers and strange plants would block this way and that. I listened to music and that made everything even more surreal.I had always heard that the top of the Great Wall was so wide that five horses could ride side by side (16 feet across). The Deep Icy Lake Lake Wakatipu, cut by glaciers 15,000 years ago, plummets to 399 meters in depth (almost a quarter-mile)! There is something creepy about very-deep lakes. I don't know what it is. I mean, anything could be down there. From The Top of the Great Wall Far in the north, this area of the Great Wall has been overgrown with vegetation. Birds and little creatures are all over the place. A path has been made over time, and it weaves in and out of these overgrown bits.
