About to Explore Milford Sound Milford Sound was one of the three places that everyone in New Zealand told me I had to visit. And after arriving there, I'm glad I did! It was a bit foggy and cloudy while I was there, but it made for a nice mood. The light rain would get a bit annoying on the lens, but we all learn to deal with these little bummer things that happen. Nothing is perfect and nothing is easy... - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest of this entry here.
Heavy Industry in Petaluma Taking photos near ground-water can be very interesting. And hard! Getting near that puddle is tough because you have to splay out the tripod. Even worse, you gotta kneel down in the muck (since puddles usually involve nearby muck). But, these are all relatively high-grade problems, all in all ... - Trey Ratcliff The rest of this entry can be read here at stuckincustoms.com.
The Megapolis I was spending the day with various characters including June Arunga, Paul Roussin, and Cali Lewis while hunting around New York City for some interesting shots. I never get tired of shooting there. It's a bit like the ocean in a way... it changes and cycles with the light and the motion. I find myself circling back to the same bits again and again to see how things have changed.I don't know why I happened to be posting this one so close to the Petaluma puddle shot from a few days ago... I suppose it is just somewhat of a coincidence! The hardest bit about these shots is getting my head so close to the ground. It's impossibly awkward, and I'm sure I look like quite the loon, splayed out across the pavement of Times Square!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Into the Sea I wonder what percentage of photographers live on the West Coast versus the East Coast. Of course, the west gets all the great sunsets over the ocean, and the east gets all the great sunrises. Given that most sane people are asleep at sunrise, and given that most photographers are insane -- I am not sure! - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Trey in Hot Water In some spots, this water is like a lukewarm bath. In other places, it's like falling in fresh magma. I wish I could get some place that's right in between.... you know... about the temperature of a molten lava cake. - Trey Ratcliff Read about it and see the list of the strangest things I've done so far at the Stuck in Customs blog!
Prismatic Steam in Yellowstone
This is the beautiful grand prismatic spring, which you have probably seen featured here before ...

Secret Meetings in Hollywood This photo was taken in Los Angeles (Santa Monica to be exact) after I got finished with one of those Hollywood Power-Lunches you always hear about. I'm not yet ready to talk about it... but I just wanted to put out a little teaser for you. I'll be sure to put out the full story when it is ready to be told. So, anyway, after the meeting I took my camera and tripod across a few streets over to the beach. I'm not sure, but I'm fairly certain this is where they filmed the opening to Three's Company. It's burned into some deep layer... strange bits of my 70's brain were firing away as I was walking down the coast. The palm trees and the blue sky -- they were so LA -- so I set up to grab a shot.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Dock to Forever One of the advantages of going down all the side roads is that you get to find cool places! After leaving Nelson on the South Island, we found a little lake on the map that looked about perfect. After a few hours of meandering, we discovered this place was almost completely empty (just like every place else on the South Island!). Even better, there was a perfect little dock jutting out into the lake.I first took a bunch of shots with my 14-24mm lens... but it was not really getting the dock with the distant valley in the right way. So, I put on my 70-200mm, zoomed in almost all the way, then backed up quite a bit to get the compression effect of the valley. Remind me to post the other version someday so you can see the comparison! I haven't processed it yet -- but it is in my "Pile to Process" -- which is now 22,000 strong.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Lonely but Beautiful Path I have a lot of alone time. When I am out shooting, I am totally in my own world. In fact, I'm even double-in-my-own-world because I have my iPod on and I drift away into pure right-brain mode. It's quite nice, in a way, because I do achieve a zen-like peace where time does not matter.I've worked with a few photographers that will copy and paste a sky from one photo and put it into another photo. I don't do that stuff - that is waaaay too much editing for me. All the clouds and colors you see are true and wonderfully there. I even sat with a guy once who would take a perfect moon out of one photo and paste it into another! I simply can't bring myself to do anything like that... it's just too over-the-top!Anyway, I hope you enjoy this new photo from Florida... I've got some more beautiful ones coming up in the next week, so stay tuned!- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
