These are some rather mysterious pygmy people that came down out of the mountain jungles one day to have a dance-off with the other tribes. Dance-off is not really the right word. It’s actually kind of a serious cultural thing that is the highlight of the year for all the tribes. I was kind of hoping they'd do Thriller or something that I knew… or maybe re-enact a classic scene from Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. But they didn't! They did a very special kind of dance that was threatening, hugely impressive and used absolutely none of Turbo's marquee moves. Anyway, this particular tribe had a bunch of kids with their heads shaved down the middle and then they take some of that hair and attach it under their chins. It certainly makes for a unique look that clearly makes this tribe appear a bit different than the others. Goroka, Papua New Guinea
Every two years there is the Venice Biennale for arts. If you haven’t heard of it, I’ll attempt to explain it here. It’s sort of like the Olympics for art. Each country sends one artist to decorate a room or home or villa or warehouse however they wish. Some countries do just paintings. others sculptures, others video with music, it’s just all over the place. And you sort of walk from one venue to the next to see what each country has offered into the mix. This is Japan. They had this lovely room with old ships connected by one super-long red piece of yarn that interconnected throughout the space and were strung through 1,000 keys. The idea was that the sea and boats interconnect the world and hold the keys to connection. Venice, Italy
They are all pretty, but they are all kind of the same. I know it sounds jaded, but after you've seen a few, you've seen them all. It reminds me a lot of the Chinese culture how there is a certain design, and then it is copied over and over again. I've been to so many markets where everyone sells the exact same thing. For example, I was in this big mall, and one floor just sold mobile-phone covers. Each store was small, and jam-packed with thousands of covers. And there must have been 50-75 of these shops all side-by-side! It reminds me of an article Dave Barry wrote about him traveling to Japan with his wife. She went out shopping and came back with all this realistic-looking plastic food. Restaurants use these to put in their windows so people know what is inside. Dave asked her why in the hell she bought these. And she said, "I don't know! There was just such a selection!" Beijing, China
