Who know Pittsburgh was this beautiful!?! I certainly had no idea! I didn't know it was so colorful... that was maybe the most surprising thing to me. There's a little hillock/mountain that you can ascend via a funicular. We took it up around sunset so we could take a variety of photos as the sun was setting. This tends to be my favorite time to shoot: just after sunset so there is a mix of artificial and natural, ambient light. Read more: https://www.StuckInCustoms.com
Walking in the Park Instead of describing this photo, I'll talk about a little trick. See how the background is all blurry and quite flat (not complex)? This happens when you use a very low number for your F-Stop. In this case, it was 1.4 on the 50mm 1.4 lens - although this would have also worked with the more inexpensive 1.8 lens. Anyway, if the person (or object) you are shooting is a lot closer to you than the distant background, the entire area back there will be very washed-out and flat. Behind her, there was actually a lot of complexity. There was a park with trees and sky and lights and everything, but it all gets washed away with this technique.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this entry at the Stuck in Customs blog.
I took this from the roof of the Ritz-Carlton on my first night after arrival. It wasn't easy to get up there, I tell ya. It was quite assassin's creed. I went up with security (you have to get permission) and step over all these pipes, duck under air conditioning units, slither through other pipes, and this sort of thing. But, after all that, it was worth it. I had 360 degree views of the whole city, but I think this is probably one of the best angles. I'd love to come back up here and take photos of the fireworks some time! - Trey Ratcliff Click here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
