I think this was one of the last years that they let people use tripods in here. I remember coming back the next year with some friends and the guards had totally changed their tunes. It's still such a weird regulation to me. I think most of the reason is that they don't want people to trip on tripods and fall over, but that almost never happens. And it definitely doesn't happen in these wide-open spaces like this. I think people are much more likely to trip on a stroller or a myriad of other devices people carry about. I believe that Kyoto has hundreds of temples, and at almost every one, you can see scenes like this. I don't know a lot about trees, but I'm pretty sure those red ones are Japanese maples. Well, now I'm not so sure because the Japanese maples in my yard turn red in the Spring. Maybe they turn red in the Autumn too? Well, I guess I had should pay better attention!
